Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

I like the SS pre into tube power better, but I am willing to try any design. If it gives me the sound and response I want, I don't care what technology is used to create it.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

I have a peavey mace that is 160 watts. Solid state pre and tube power. Skynyrd made them famous. I bought it to profile with my kemper. Have not gotten around to it yet. Kemper is not working.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

I was thinking of the old SD Twin Tube pedals, or, like I said, a rack mount tube preamp. I bet those AMT amp pedals would probably sound good too, although they are solid state.

The AMT SS-11 preamps are all tube, 2X 12AX7s running at high voltage, not starved. The SS-20 is a hybrid, a 12AX7 does most of the work and there is FET circuitry that kicks in when you crank the gain. Their FET based stuff sounds great too, SS-30 and all the emulator ones.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

sounds like you may know a thing or two about amps to be able to hybridize an existing design! At that point you could probably build whatever you like.

On another note, I didnt think marshall's hybrid stuff went back this far: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MARSHALL-ME...609337?hash=item4651c582f9:g:AnQAAOSw7n9XFFl4.

That's a way cool Marshall. Too bad some segment of society has driven the prices of vintage gear through the roof. It's not even close to being worth a grand. But it does give me a formula for my next hybrid build. I had plans for another shot at tube preamp with a better SS power amp stage. I'm thinking now about an SS preamp with a tube power stage. Have to check the cost of transformers but I think I already know the answer, there cost will be prohibitive...might as well build a full on tube amp.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

Well, if you want it to be light, a tube power amp section is not the way to go. A good transformer for some good power has some heft to it. With Class D power amps these days (that weight next to nothing), a good tube preamp and SS power amp would be great to lug around.

Agreed, have a Marshall AVT50 that's not bad as far as weight goes. But the amp I usually through in the car is a 1 X 12 cabinet with a 5F1 for a first choice and I added a Fender Mustang II amp if I need to get loud and crazy.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

I had a Marshall AVT back in the day and have a Orange Micro now. I am super impressed with Hybrid amps. I love my Blackface Bandmaster, but it has a short and won't turn on. Won't be the last issue. It is fifty years old after all. And with the price of new tube amps on the higher side all things considered, my next gigging amp will likely be the Vox AV30. It has a jack for an extension cabinet so I can hook my 2x12 up to it if need be. Hard to go wrong with that.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

I had a '65 Bandmaster, great amp, sold it when I went off to college. If the transformers in your amp are in good shape you could buy the parts from Hoffman for about $170. Pretty easy to wire up the board and you'll have gem of an amp.

Re: Hybrid amps - I'm a beleiver

I have an acquaintance that is an electrical engineer and guitarist. He has expressed interest in working on it. But I meed to work with his schedule. It was also worked on by Jeff Seal previously so I don't want to change too much. He made it come alive after I got it and all.

But it's a studio amp for me now. Less likely to get damaged and if it fails on me I can grab one of the others we're recording with.
