Hybrid pickups

I was thinking about taking half a coil out of a stock schecter humbucker and half a coil out of a Dimarzio Tone Zone and joining them together to make a hybrid. I dont like the Tone Zone because it is too dark sounding and the stock Schecter pickup could use some warmth to it. Has anyone done this and is easy to wire it together? Please explain

Re: Hybrid pickups

The Tone Zone is already a hybrid. If it combines a strong coil with a much weaker one then you would want to use the strong one to add "warmth". If the weak one is weaker than one from your Schecter then the end result will be an even darker pickup.

I'll need to see if there is any analysis on the pickup online, unless you're able to at least provide the DCR of each of the coils in the TZ (as well as the total DCR from you Schecter pickup). That would go a long way in determining whether your idea is at least feasible.

Re: Hybrid pickups

I wouldn't use half a coil from each pup...you won't get any sound. I would use one full coil from each pup. Besides, how do you intend to cut the coil in half?

Just kidding. I know what you are saying. You meant to say...half a humbucker (which is one coil).

Making a hybrid is not difficult if you have good skills, but it is delicate. Before you attempt it, I would recommend that you review many videos about the process.
