I am really pissed off with Fender

The new American Professional Jazzmaster doesn't have the compound radius neck that the previous (1st) generation just had.

I was ready to shop for one. Now I won't.

Discuss.

And of course every single 1st generation is sold and unavailable even used.

Edit: btw, do you have a link to that old model? I thought they only did compound for elite or deluxe models.

It's a tough economy and it seems like almost everyone in every industry is asking "how can we give these guys less and still charge the same amount?".
Maybe they were concerned that offering that neck would take away incentive to go for the higher end models. Gibson ain't the only guys going after the "blues lawyers" I guess.
Could always get a loaded body and bring your own neck, make a "partsmaster".

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

I played a new one in a shop recently and it had the vintage 7.25" non compound -it was soooooooo gross.

I prefer the compound 9 or bigger when they come around

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

Fender CFO told everyone this was coming...their target customer base is women and uke players...ergo small necks...it is the future...

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

I thought American Professionals were all straight radiused and the Elites were Compound. Going back to 2017 they spec says 9.5” radius.

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

This is the first time I’ve heard Jazzmaster and compound radius mentioned together.

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

I've never owned a compound radius
Sometimes my 7.25 radius frets out
But I guess I don't bend more than a full step very often
For those that like compound or generally flat, is it cuz you bend up more than I do? Do you notice other benefits in feel or playability,
Or would compound radii be somewhat wasted on my unskilled inexpressive self

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

Personally, I just like a flat radius. Compound is a nice perk but 12 or above is where I feel more comfortable.

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

12” is fine. 9.5” is great. I don’t keep my action low, so I don’t even mind 7.25”.

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

9.5"-14" is fine with me. i play with higher action but i still dont like 7.25" much

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

I don't know that I have ever seen an offset with a compound radius from Fender.

I am thinking you could build your own for less than the cost of new

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

Fender seems to be under the impression most of their customers are chasing "vintage-correct" reissues... and they may quite possibly be right

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

The Jim Root is compound.

Yes he also has a signature jazzmaster on top of his Tele and strat lol

Would love to see some internal research. The difference in feel (to me) between 7.25" and 9.5" is very subtle, but the latter does not fret out on heavy bends (with my set up).

Re: I am really pissed off with Fender

right, and playing slide that tight radius messes with things too much. im never playing more than three strings at once with a slide but ill do chords on the d, g, b strings so want them to be flat enough to make that happen without getting wacky with the string heights

Now with slide I see exactly what you're talking about, 7.25 would be way too curved

I have smaller hands and especially with a v shaped neck and 7.25" it's so easy to fret with my thumb and Barre chords seem like they take less pressure. I get a little hand fatigue after a while doing a lot of that on the tele with 9.5" C shape. I don't keep the action much higher on the tele. Maybe my hands just need more strength.

If I ever did compound I would like 7.25 to say maybe 12 I think
