I bought a new Solid State amp today

I found a new Fender Stage 100 DSP head today for $300 Canadian.... Fender no longer makes them and the store has had it around for years.... original price was $680 Canadian..... It has all the built in Effects and a direct XLR output in the back..... 100 watts of solid state power is still a lot of volume.... I'll use it thru my Marshall cab

Kool, sounds like ya got yourself a good deal there!

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

Ya it was a pretty good deal.... less then half price... no footswitch saddly.... the amp is brand new and had been sitting there for at least 2 years that i can remember.... Fender has switched to Dyna Touch and FM series stuff for their solid state lines...

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

Well i just gave it a test run... not the greatest sounding amp but for the bucks it will do just fine.... It may sound better with different speakers..... Can't wait to try it out in a band setting to see how it sounds..... but i know it will not replace my tube heads anytime soon...

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

Solid state is highly underestimated for a variety of tasks - including "tightness" in the booty, reliability/consistency, and price! There are probably a lot of killer tones recorded that people think are tube that aren't. Good tone is good tone period.

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

My high school had some Stage 160s, those things ripped but the new digital sound effect gizmos on the 1600s just own, period.

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

Nice amp. I haven't heard of a Fender stage amp before, prolly because i just started using fender. But the older amps are definately in a way much better

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

This amp basicly is a Multi FX unit with a power amp.... once i learned how to use the effect controlls it sounds pretty good with some FX's on.... Take the FX's away and it is a little dry... The Delays are good..... The Chorus is OK but not strong enough... on the clean channel the Chorus is hard to hear at all even with the FX Leval maxed out... The Chorus on the 10 year old Princton Stereo Chorus amp i have sounds great compaired to this Stage DSP's.... Mind you the Princton Chorus amps from that era are analog Chorus units in them not digital like in the DSP.... The Stage 100's Flanger is slightly better then teh chorus, the Tremelo is cool.. Wish you could set it so you could use 2 effects at once but so far it looks like that is not an option....

Kind of funny as i could not figure out how to get the power cord out of the head... it sat inside it and the fat plug would not come out past the little gap in the back.... I didn't know that the front silver face plate was held on with velcro and removes so you can store the footswitch inside it.

Oh i have an original 41 year old 65 Deluxe too.... It farts along and takes pedals well... but to tell the truth this new Stage 100 amp's drive channel has close to the same tone one would get if you stuck a Boss DS1 in front of my tube 65 Deluxe..... Not quite but close.... This series of Fender solid state amps dirt channels remind me of the Boss DS1 sound a lot

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

One thing i noticed about this DSP line Fender put out is they are noisey.... I remember trying these things out when they were new and they were noisy... same with the Marshall MG series.... lots of hum in these amps. No wonder they discontinued them... but for $300 Canadian it is a lot of fun....

I am wonder about the footswitch to my new amp..... has anyone out there ever owned a Stage 100 DSP amp? Mine did not come with a foot switch and i was wondering if the footswitch has ON/OFF bottons for the FX's.... as far as i can tell with the DSP series Fender put out is the only way to turn the FX's off is to turn the volume knob off... which in turn makes me believe the FX's are always on... Anyone know what is the right model of Footswtch to my Stage 100 DSP Head?

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

They only discontinued the stage line not to long ago (less then 2 years) so u should be able to find a footswitch (search the fender website they usually have good info in the support section)

I'm feeling awful quilty about buying this amp..... I should of used the $300 to fix up my JCM 800 head and retube my Classic 30 combo.... also i look around at the tons and tons and TONS of gear i have bought over the years and think sometime i should sell some to make room for new stuff when i get Sudden GAS..... Maybe i could start to sell some of my less used cheaper pieces and buy better quality stuff... I want a Les Paul Deluxe goldtop and selling some of my gear may be the only way to get one. only Time will tell what i do.... either way i'm in no hurry.

Since no Tube amp has every cut it for me at bedroom levels Solid State works for me to Practice.... But this 100 watt head maybe too loud for standard bedroom volumes... I want to try it out at a jam sometime soon and see how it reacts... I know it is not an amazing amp, more of a toy...

Nothing beats SS for bedrooom level playin'. But giggin', it's all about the tubez.

Ya, i've pretty much i've used solid state Fenders to practice thru my whole life.... At least 20 years now... i've had a few other solid state Marshalls and stuff..... one amp i regret selling was my 2x12 Ultra Chorus..... They were fun for that huge Chorus sound..... The Princton Chorus amp i have is good but the speakers are cheap and cra*p out easy

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

congrats on the great find .. and welcome to the ss brotherhood :D

given that one, mr seymour w duncan tore the heads off of everyone in the room without a tube amp at the UGD jam, i make no apologies for being tube-free

cheers

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

I've played two gigs recently using my solid state Tech 21 Trademark 60. I ran it into my Marshall 2x12 cab and it sounded great!

That's not gonna stop me buying my drummer's brother's '77 JMP 2204 as soon as I can get my hands on it though! :D

I turned my back on SS amps a long time ago..... but always kept one or 2 around for ultra low volume practices at home were tubes don't work... looks like i'll be moving into an appartment building in the next few years and the volume thing will be an issue... But right now it looks like i have 5 tube amps and 4 solid state amps and 1 POD in my collection......

Half and half....

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

I got a chance to crank this solid state thing for a bit last night..... to my surprise it kicked some tones out that were OK..... Also to my surprise the clean channel sucks....... it almost sounds like there is a limiter..... but the dirt channel thru my Marshall cab was giving me a rocking tone like Motley Crue type of fuzz.... I mean it's still a cheap ass amp.. farts and warts and all..... I'm taking it to a jam tomorrow night.....

The odd part was the clean channel sucking..... A Fender amp and being solid state i thought the clean channel would sing and ring..... it's poop... Maybe it's the speaker in my cab...

The funny part is the i was sitting there with my MIM strat in my hands playing thru this amp when it hit me..... i got the guitar used for $200, the amp for $300, and the cab for $260..... that is pretty much the same amount this Fender amp was at full price......

Re: I bought a new Solid State amp today

Kinda funny this thread popped up. I went to a local store today and after a while plugged into a Fender Jazz King amp, 140 watts SS, 15inch eminence speaker. I couldnt believe it really, but it sounded quite good for SS. Still not as good as my Laney in cleans, but it did what it was supposed to do. Very clean, extremely good EQ options and a few things like a limiter and such. They had it for $1000, but obviously was the list; most of the online sites have it for $700.

Anyone have similar experiences with the jazz king?
