I Bought A Vox ToneLab LE

STRATDELUXER97

I'm kind of tired of having so many pedals chained up in a row, plus tired of all the wall warts and the downside of having so many pedals.....I've owned a Valvetronix VTH 120 head now since it came out and still love it! Figured I'd love the ToneLab LE as my only source now,for all of my effects going into my amp(s)....I'm basically just running my modded Vox 847 wah in front of it and I use a volume pedal at the output of the ToneLab...I just got it and so theres a learning curve...Pretty nice unit so far, built tough, and it's heavy also...I'm finding the Vox/Korg stuff to be really good..

Forgot to mention that I only payed $230 with the shipping...Liking what I'm dialing in so far already!

I am really thinking of getting one and running it into a Crate PowerBlock then into a 4x12 cabinet - you just using it for effects? Have you tried any of the amp modeling?

Re: I Bought A Vox ToneLab LE

I saw a youtube video with a tonelab set up to mimic a Soldano sound and my jaw dropped. I've got the Johnson J-station and I use that for my home practice...either thru headphones or a set of bookshelf speakers...but I've got a crate powerblock which allows me to go mobile. It sounds good-nuff for what I use it for...and it's easy to plug into any 4x12 and just jam! You can snag the powerblocks for cheap and keep them in a ready-bag in your car. I am still lusting after one of the Vox units...when I get back to work, I'm gettin' one!!!

I'm going to use the entire unit straight into either a clean BF Fender Pro Reverb or my 73 Marshall head into a 2x12 cabinet...I Like some of the sounds I've dialed up in it already(I'm pretty good at it)....

The amp models and the effects that I need to use, sound really good and convincing enough for my picky ears!

I really would like to just plug into the Tonelab LE and play and cut down on setup time, extra cabling, and extra problems overall....So far I Like this thing, plus I also own the original VTH 120 Valvetronix head and so the learning curve is pretty easy for me...Both units work pretty similar..

I've got a nice clean tone dialed in and a pretty good Vox AC 30TB tone...Just got the unit yesterday...I've read through the manual at least 3 times before I got mine! :approve:

Hey John,

I would suggest that you get a Tonebone Hot British and replace the tube with a NOS RCA long plate.:smokin: :biglaugh:

:lmao:

Actually I'll need to sell a few pedals.....:11:

Maybe a NOS RCA in my ToneLab LE huh? Looks like a pain in the a$$ to access though!

Re: I Bought A Vox ToneLab LE

John,

Nice find, Bro! Once you get into it, you'll love it. I'm using the original Tonelab with the VC-12 pedal board for gigging. You'll see it's got incredible tones and effects once you do a little exploration. I typically run it through the effects loop on my amp, put it on the 50w Plexi setting, crank up the virtual gain and gain knobs, and use my amp's speakers (flip the switch on the back to "Line", to do this). If you run it straight into the amp, set the switch to "amp". That setting seems to be more geared to recording through a computer, since you'll use the "speaker cab" setting on the Tonelab.

P.S. If you've already figured this all out, just tell me to shut up. Sorry, I just love the Tonelab:banana:

Good luck,

Jeff

p.p.s. The original 12AX7 in it should be an Electro-Harmonix. Great sounding tube. I tried a GT Mullard reissue and hated it. The only other one I would try is the Tung-Sol 12AX7. Supposed to be nice sounding.

Hi Jeff......Yes I've already got a pretty good handle on the ToneLab LE ,but still appreciate the post!:beerchug:

So far I have a nice clean BF Fender sound,An AC30 TB(Think Tom Petty and REM type stuff),An early Plexi Marshall type preset, and a heavier JCM 800 preset....The presets are also setup to add delay/echo/chorus/univibe/an extra effects pedal etc.per preset and my needs from that tone...My first set of 4 presets are on Bank 1.....Basically I go from left to right....1 is clean w/Klon Overdrive if I need it),2 is the Vox,3 is the early Marshall,4 is the JCM 800 preset...I could do pretty much play every song our band does with just these 4 presets...

The JCM 800 preset I made sounds very "Thin Lizzy"/ Bad Company ish....The 68P amp model,I'm still not that floored with and I had to add an overdrive pedal to it,to get it over the top somemore...I Like how I can roll the volume back on every one of these 4 presets and get a pretty decent clean tone...To be able to mix delay levels, add chorus, add a pedal, switch things in and out,etc...is great! My pedal board before, was basically overdrive and distortion pedals with no chorus or delay...I'd use a Verbzilla with my Marshall and the spring reverb built into my Fender amp for reverb if I needed it....

I'll create maybe 1 more bank of 4 and that should allow me to see what works and what doesn't with the mix and tone of my band....I'd love to have a higher gain Soldano or the Modern Marshall tone, but I really don't use more gain than what a JCM 800 gives....

So far I'm enjoying tweaking on this thing! Years of playing through different amps, alot of different types of pedals, and tweaking pedals, has been a help to me also....Thanks for posting!

I'm only using a modded Vox 847 of my own and a volume pedal...The rest is just the ToneLab....

It's important to get all preset levels on a bank very close, but the volume pedal between the ToneLab and my amp takes care of that...

John,

With the 68 Plexi setting, I use both gains all the way up for crunchy rhythm (backing off the volume for cleans like you do), then add the Tube Overdrive or Treble Boost pedal settings for lead. I haven't created presets yet (been too lazy), but it makes a whole lot of sense for playing out. Thanks for the idea!

I found I Like the JCM 800 tones better. They are tighter and crunchier...The 68P setting seems too compressed and I find I can't quite dial in all of the highend needed from that amp model...I only like the 68P model if it's got an effects pedal behind it to kick it in the a$$ a bit....The 800 model gets me alot closer to Bad Company,AC/DC,Thin Lizzy realm...Tones I always loved about Marshalls...

I also want to dial up some higher gain stuff....Just have to get around to it..

Re: I Bought A Vox ToneLab LE

Welcome to my world, John!

Now, would you please read my POD manual 3 times and tell me what it says?

I like the JCM800 & 900 settings too, but you need to increase the noise gate to eliminate hissing. I've always been a 68 Plexi fan. Closer to Clapton's Cream-era tone to my ears. Mine seems to nail it pretty well.

Glad you're enjoying the Tonelab. Beats the tar out of the POD IMO!:14:

Re: I Bought A Vox ToneLab LE

I've been eyeballing one of these since I got my AD50VT amp. I think the floor model would work out better for me. I sold the amp from lack of use but I could practice at home with the TL.
John, what will that do for that your head and floor board wont do and these dont allow you to turn off any of the amps and just run effects do they?
Jeffrec, do you know if the models and effects are basically the same between the new model and the Desktop? I could see that working for me too.

I play through different amps and so I wanted to do away with the stompbox array of many pedals....I didn't have any kind of delay or modulation pedals on my board. The ToneLab has alot of usable stuff on it,plus the Univibe is very cool....Yes my VTH 120 head has the same stuff, but I don't always use that setup...I can now plug the ToneLab into my Vox head if I want also though...I Like the idea of having everything capable in 1 unit on the floor...I can just pull it out of it's carry case and hook it up quick...No wall warts and many interconnect cables to hassle with! It's a nice unit.Intuitive and it's capable of great tone, but you will have to read through the manual and sit and turn buttons!

My pedalboard before basically was just an array of overdrive and distortion pedals...I can still use my 1 favorite(Like the Plexitone) right into the insert effect section of the ToneLab if I want...Basically I'll just run my own modded wah and a volume pedal into and out of the ToneLab...I leave the expression pedal to control effect parameters on the fly...

I Like using my BF Pro Reverb and also my 73 50 watt Marshall.I just plug straight into either amp and go...I've already dialed up about 6 very usable and good sounding presets...I can cover everything from BF Clean,to Vox,Early Marshall, and Modern Marshall tones...The amp models are very cool and it's the reason I still do own my Valvetronix VTH 120 head.

Guys that know me,know I Like the versatility of things, plus I Like to cycle through all of my gear..Guitars,amps,and effects.

I'm pretty sure The original Tonelab, The Tonelab Se (combined into a floor unit/pedal board), and the new LE which has a smaller footprint I think (what John has), are the same. They probably tweaked a few things with the LE model. I got the original with the VC-12 floorboard, because (at 54) it's easier to see the settings if I have the unit up high (on top of the amp or some other platform) where I can see it (LOL), and the pedal board on the floor. You'll have an easier time finding the LE, I would guess.

Good luck,

Jeff
