I couldn't play with the pickup that high just on account of hitting the low strings into it. Look at those saddles, the strings in general look pretty high. Do you have the neck angled at all?

I like a full tone. Why wouldn't it work? I don't get too much strat-itis.
Stuff like hitting the pickups has never bothered me. The neck is bolted down as much as I can get it. The strings are kind of high at around 0.11". There's some neck bow. I've been thinking about shimming my bridges.

I love a QP in middle position; had one there for thirty years in one of my Floydcasters.
Finally changed it to a PA/STK when I went Parallel Axis bridge & neck.
The stack is less rockin' but more Stratlike.
Double thick A2 sounds like a great mod for a JB.

^ I was actually thinking the exact same thing. 500k volume sounded good with the single coils but was a tad edgy. And I'm goin back to being myself with fat vintage hot tones anyways. I have 1 'rawk ax' with a 1 meg volume that I don't play. So I thought eff it I'll try a 250k volume basically. I don't use tones. I had a A2 JB before and it was kind of sloppy. But to my amazement after trying out the JBJ with a double thick A2 and 250k pot... Totally clean and detailed bot to top! I was like wtf! It's an epic wind. It's got dat vintage clarity.

They can also do other alnico grades that aren't on the drop down menu if you email them. I've gotten double thick A6 from them before and I bet they would also do UOA5. They said they don't have A9. Cool that 2,3, and 4 are now a continuous double thick magnet and not bonded.

Clint, what do you use for spacers for the double-thick magnets? And are you using longer polepieces, or just leaving the coils stock?

You can buy spacers from AxesRUs
I've also found that strat pick guards can be cut to the right size fairly easily. This is useful not only for making a spacer, but also for filling a gap when you replace an oversized ceramic magnet (as many ceramics are oversized) with a standard sized Alnico magnet.

I leave the coils stock. Then I get the lead the hell out of the way and use 2 spacers on each side and wrap masking tape around 1 of the spacers on each side to get the coils to sit exactly flush. This one took 3 layers of masking tape.

^ I absolutely could tell the difference blind if I played guitars set up the same and loaded with the 3 JBs I have. Stock JB, 80s JBJ, and Ant JB. They sound that different. I'll post a sound clip soon. I'm sure it won't come through that obviously on the recording but I'm positive that the winds are different. 2 glaring differences are the JBJ has less bass and no mid spike, it rings out really clean bot to top.

Agreed – there are head-to-head comparisons on youtube, that aren't done by the folks at SDuncan, that definitely show a significant difference.
I'd kind of like to see that same comparison with multiple examples... I always wonder if these differences fall within the tolerances inherent in manufacturing. I've owned several JBs and several Air Nortons in my day, and they did NOT all sound alike, but I haven't been axe-slinging long enough to have pickups from significantly different production eras.
