I can't find a guitar I dig!

Re: I can't find a guitar I dig!

if i were in your situation, I would go to every SECOND HAND store around. That way you'll have a broader range of axes new and old. Personally I would look into some kind of Fender. You've got most bases covered with that PRS, get a Tele or a Strat to fill in the gaps. It doesn't make much sense IMHO if you want just two functional guitars that function nearly the same way. Other than having a backup, one guitar is going to end up playing second fiddle.

Not that many used stores around. There was a single nice one, but I think it's closed now. If you want to look at it in terms of of filling gaps in sounds, my PRS sounds more like a super strat than a gibson, with the bolt on neck.

I'm heading over to a store tonight to do some looking around.

That is guitar is very cool. The tailpiece doesn't suit it though IMO. Would look better like this:

The blue ASAT Special I posted is a Tribute model --- they go for $599 brand new, and feel better in every way than MIA Fenders.

What kind of pickups are on it though? They don't looks like singles, soaps or buckers...?

They are totally their own thing. Image is a link.

These are good...I don't know that mine feels better than my US Tele, cause the Tele's neck is fatter and wider than the ASAT, but they do play and sound good. I will say that it feels better in every way than my MIM Tele.

The natural ones or the blue burst ones have ash bodies. The other colors are basswood.

As for the pickups, they're made in the USA and are superb out of the box. I can go from spanky squawk and twang to some of the most buttery lead tones I'll ever need...I don't miss my LP...:wall:

Here's mine next to the C-50.

They are G&L large rectangular MFDs ( Magnetic Field Detection) and they are very very good indeed. I bought one of these ASAT Specials and within two weeks I sprung for another one. The pickups are like nothing else, for blues or rock they just smoke, and they are also great for rockabilly or country, they have a lovely twang with grunt.

Re: I can't find a guitar I dig!

Like I said, I am a humbucker kinda guy.
I traditionally am fond of maple necks with light finishes, and love locking tuners.
I would ideally like something with no trem.
My favorite body wood combo is mahogany and maple, and when it's just 1 wood, mahogany.
I don't want another 24 fret guitar. It's nice for certain pieces, but I want that sweet spot that a 24 fretter can't offer.
It needs to be light. Not fond of heavy instruments.

Hmm, sounds to me like somebody looking for a mahogany Tele-Gib, or maybe a Zakk Wylde Les Paul.... or at least something along those lines...

Re: I can't find a guitar I dig!

I have the opposite problem, I'm happy with a lot of guitars. I think an LP, SG, and 335 is mandatory for a serious guitarist, along with a full hollowbody. Rotate between them. You get in a rut with one or two guitars. You're being awful fussy, sometimes guitars have to grow on you.

+1. Sometimes I'll pick up one of my guitars that I haven't played in awhile and after a few days I think, "man I love this guitar, I'm going to use this as my #1 axe". Then for curiosity I'll pick up another and sfter a few days, the same thing.

My problem is that I have too many guitars and I love them all and can't make up my mind which is to be my go to guitar.

I also agree that different types of guitars inspire you to play differently, to expand your musical environment and skills. (when I inherrited my Tele and fixed it the way I wanted it, I found myself driven to learn more country, my SG makes me feel like getting down and dirty, my Sheraton makes me want to play more jazz and blues, etc).

Re: I can't find a guitar I dig!

I think my mind has just narrowed it down.

I'm not gonna lie, even with my profound annoyance with Gibson, the scale and the construction could be a nice addition, considering my PRS is a bolt on neck, and my other electric is also a bolt on (with single coils).

Now, the biggest challenge of all : to find a gibson that I like, lol.

(Doesn't have to be gibson brand, just based on their designs)

Carvin has some nice LesPaul type guitars.

Here is my slant: If I had to size down to 3 guitars, I would have a Les Paul, Stratocaster and a Telecaster. The Les Paul might be a Carvin model, but I would want to play one before I would buy.

All those guitars would be very well set up with nice pups and the Strat would be preferably a hardtail. If not a hardtail, it would have a custom trem block and I would have it fixed (blocked out) like Clapton does his.

Re: I can't find a guitar I dig!

+1 on checkin' out the Carvin CS models. I do know they have a 10 day return policy on their gear. If you are not 100% happy with your guitar, amp, whatever, they will give you a full refund. I am looking at Carvin myself. I just need the cash. Check out come of the vids on the carvin channel or you tube. They sound amazing. Hope this helps you out and good luck!
