I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

When i play my guitar plugged in i play 99,9% of the time with a clean sound. When i step on dirt boxes it just takes away the fun for me - Am i sick?

If you look at my influences they are mostly Jazz players, Hank Marvin, R.E.M., Smiths etc

The world needs more like you.

try stepping on a dirt box, then rolling your guitars volume down = my favorite tone, makes for a more lively clean tone that is just slightly less clean than it would be straight into the amp

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

there is nothing wrong with you, the rest of us are trying to compensate for something

When I was a kid, I used to think the distortion on the Peavey Backstage Plus was the most AWESOME sound and it made me play like a god.

As I'm getting older, I find myself backing off the gain. I'm still nowhere's near "clean."

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

I'm with you too. I prefer to use only amp distortion. anything else I've tried always sounded "artificial".

Of course you are not sick... All the guys before you who played clean were not sick... It's just your style.
Also cleaning up the sound can let the nice harmonic frequencies of the guitar rig out without being pushed out of it... just ringing.

I like the "clean going to dirt" sound myself.

You're not sick, you're awesome!

I love good clean tone WAY more than I love good OD/dist tone.

Not sick. But there's a time and place to unleash the ol fury, and deliver the face-melter! Johnny Marr, now there's a tasty player...

Good for you! A man after my own heart...

I own a variety of distortion pedals (Boss DS-1, Duncan Pickup Booster, Fulltone 69...) and I never use any of them.

My old Fender amps are set up to work perfectly, use great tubes and speakers, and are modded slightly to be very touch sensitive...and my guitars are all set up for maximum sustain.

I don't need pedals...especially distortion pedals.

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

I like both...and I do not like being put in boxes much either...what ever works and gives the notes life!
May it be clean or dirty....Like Jeff Beck and Gilmour....both sounds awesome clean or distorted!

You and I are on the same wavelength . . . I use distortion pedals for some songs that I have to cover, but I much prefer a clean sound (sometimes with some effects) when I'm playing.

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

I wish more guys didn't use distortion...

That bagful of angry bumble bees tone is such a boring cliche!

Makes everyone have such a similar, childish tone too.

Just my opinion...

I tend to agree, plus high gain also adds a ton of compression. You can't explore the full dynamic range of your instrument when it's being squashed by outrageous preamp clipping.

That said, there is a time and place for everything, including the bag of angry bumblebees tone :9:

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

Nobody plays alike, some have more control than others, different amps and setups also counts for alot.
And the dynamic range is nullyfied by the crappy all midrange speakers:D

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

Nothing wrong with u at all IMO.. I hardly even use my BAD monkey... I prefer playing clean.... because I prefer my sound like that.... its very rare that i use the stomp box... tell u what try what FLANK suggested it helps step on the box but roll back the volume on the guitar..

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

U know MY BESt BUDDY also never uses a STOMP BOX he plays clean AND SOUNDS GREAT.....

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

When you feel that a distortion is needed step on it. It may happen in one or two songs in the whole gig, may not happen at all.
You feel you need it all of the time... it's also fine.

Music is where anything goes.

Re: I can't play with od/dist/fuzz what's wrong with me?

YOU SICK #@%&?#!!!

Okay, okay, just kidding. I love amp distortion. I pretty much don't like boxes except for the Plexitone and my old Marshall Supa Fuzz. However, a great CLEAN sound is to die for. One that really fills up the room. I too love REM, The Smiths and stuff like that as well as Led Zeppelin, Rush, Priest, Maiden etc... If we all sounded the same things would be soooooo boring.
