I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

I bought beam blockers for my pitchy 2x12 combo amp last month. I got the chance to put 'em on a couple days ago (my amp is at my buddy's house where we jam), we tried all kinds of tools but none would even loosen them. I'm very unfamiliar with amps and this is my first mod worthy one. I don't have any pictures unfortunately, but it seems like a nut and bolt type thing, 6 sided nut. It's fastened on with 4 of them and i tried a bunch of rachets (I think, i don't know tools that well). I don't know what to do.

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

I take it you're dealing with a rear loaded speaker that is mounted on fixed threaded studs. (My Carvin 2x12 is like that) To use a socket wrench you need a deep one because the studs are probably just over and inch long so a regular socket can't quite get to the nut to get a bite. I had a simliar problem with my cab but this worked. Find the correct sized socket slip it over the nut. Try using a nut driver handle (they look like a screw driver but attach to the socket..they just don't ratchet) and see if you can't get the nut driver end to bite in the square hole of the socket enough to let you turn it. You'll probably have to lift the socket a bit off the nut too. A little wiggiling and this worked on my cab. Also a small open-ended wrech will probably work too.

I will try that. But the six sided part is actually no more than a quarter inch thick, and the bolt doesnt extend from it, the surface is flat, nothing protrudes from the center. Maybe i'm confused or something.

Sounds like you are trying to remove the countersunken mounting bolt. Try the other side of that, and see if there aren't actual nuts that you can unscrew, and release the speakers.

The speakers are either rear loaded in the cabinet, or front loaded in the cabinet. Either way they should be removable with fairly common tools that you would have around the house.

+1 ...... the countersunken mounting bolt might be a "T" nut fastener...just a guess

LunaticFringe Have you been able to remove the speakers yet?

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

i will try the next time i go to my buddies house to jam, i had considered taking the front part of the amp off, the grille and whatnot to check it out, but i was hoping it wouldnt be that way. Seems kind of dumb to fasten them like that, doesn't it? Since I don't have any pics and I don't know how to describe it in amp terminology, i'll post a rough sketch made from paint in a minute.

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

Here is my amp from the back. To me it seems that to get to the other side of the screws, i will have to remove the grille that is staple gunned on. Is that true?

Picture is not showing but it's a standard combo.

The bolt might be going through the hole in the speaker mounting frame into a T nut (the T nut will be "stuck" into the wooden speaker baffle..from the front, under the grille clothe and the threaded sleeve of the T nut will be in a hole in the baffle. Do you know about T nuts?

I can't understand why you can't get a nut driver over the head of the bolt if it is 1/4 inch thick. Could the sockets not get a grip on the head of the bolt because the socket's wall thickness would not allow you to ?

Do you know about nut drivers? Like a screwdriver handle with a socket attached to the end...might be better than a socket set. About what size is the bolt head? Possibly metric?

I'm running out of ideas here.

I 'll wait for your answer.

Rich S ..the pic (paint drawing) is very small and unfortunately doesn't help all that much IMHO.

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

Yea sorry I cant give much technical help here. I can get the piece over the nut, it just won't budge. I'm not familiar with a t nut. Does that mean that there is no point to taking the front off and messing around with that end?

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

I don't know about nut drivers, maybe I will pick one up at home hardware. How do they work better than what i am using right now (the ones you can move forward and then it clicks when you move backwards)?

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

Take the front baffle off and see if the nuts are on that side. It seems like you are trying to remove the T-nuts, and that is not gonna work.

Let us know what you figure out.

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

The make and model of amp (as suggested above) could help...maybe someone else in the forum has the same amp and has changed speakers.

I wouldn't remove the grille cloth personally. If it has to be removed, I'd take it in somewhere. Just my opinion. Putting it back on properly could be more of a pain than you bargained for.

If the socket fits (with the ratchet handle you were using) on the bolt head, but you can't get it to move, then I'm guessing that the bolt is rusted into the T-nut. A nut driver will not help you with this...save your money.

You might have to put some penetrating oil ( only a drop or so is needed) into the "sleeve" of the T-nut (or whatever) to loosen it. This will require the grille cloth to be removed IF your speakers are attached to the baffle the way I suspect.

PS Where are you located in Ontario ?

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

I bought the amp second hand off some guy about a month ago in Barrie, where I live. It's a Laney TFX320 2x12. I think Laney phased them out at some point, I can barely find any information about it on the internet. Can you suggest a brand of penetrating oil? The nut doesn't look rusty but I guess anything can be down there in those grooves.

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

I looked in the Crappy Tire catalog...no luck...but they might have some at the stores.

An old Home Hardware catalog shows "3 -IN-1" brand penetrating oil and "liquid wrench" by GUNK. I'm still not so sure if this is the right route to go and the oil would be better put in the T-nut side (assuming the speaker is fastened with T-nuts) as I'm not convinced you can get the oil to seep down to threads if it has to get under the head of the bolt first..which is tight to the speaker frame.

If you do tryt this, DON"T USE MUCH OIL !!, it only takes very little and you don't want to spill any on the grille cloth, speaker cone, etc.

You will have enough of this stuff to pass it on to your great-grandchildren, unless you become a mechanic/machinist of some sort. LOL

You might want to start a new thread " Laney TFX320 2X12..NEED HELP ( or similar). These amps are from England ...no ?

Keep us updated. Good Luck !!

Barrie....cool

Re: I Can't Remove The Speakers From My Amp!

Well I got an update for you guys. I got some Gunk Liquid Wrench and after leaving it on for 15 minutes I went to wipe off the excess lubricant so i could use the wrench with less slip. As I wiped it they started spinning, it was pretty crazy. So I got the beam blockers on and MAN what a difference! I was really sceptical of how much a little flimsy dome like that could help my tone, and I was really thinking that the 60 bucks it took me to get them to my door better be worth it. These things are nuts. Totally smoothed out the harshness. I can crank my treble now and it works. Before i had to leave my mids and treble down or live with ringing ears for about two hours. Thanks for the help.
