Therefore, if it's a pickup I don't know about, I much prefer verbal descriptions where the player describes how this pickup sounds RELATIVE to a pickup that I do know about. That relativity is the constant, and a pretty reliable one at that.


These are the only verbal comparisons that are useful to me. Otherwise it's pissing in the wind.


I always hear how this pickup is fat or cuts or is this or that....but all those qualities might be NULL if my setup is different. How is compared to X pickup....something that IS constant.

...and this is how you gain knowledge through pickups. You get recommended a '59 on your first day here, then you read about how the JB is slightly hotter, and a bit more powerful, and on that, you get one, and so on.

There's definitely a reason that I tag a lot of my comments with "IMO". You need to realize that one guy's treasure is another guy's trash. If at all possible, go hear the stuff for yourself. You can be pointed in the right direction, but ultimately, you should make the decision based on what sounds good to YOUR ears.
