However, I came across this video completely by accident while looking for clips demo'ing the new 5150 III and I was pretty impressed with this.

I've seen the endless debate threads over how EVH got his tone, and I really don't care, but I remember arguments about the SuperD being in there and I noticed that in this clip, the pickup is a SuperD in an ash strat and played straight through a modded Marshall 50 watt plexi RI.

Sounds pretty good to me. Anyway, not meaning to beat a dead horse, but when I find something cool I like to share it.

That's really good, really close.

I listened to it a few times, twice with nice headphones. I feel like the same rig/guitar with a '59 or a '78 would be closer, the front end sounds just slightly too pushed, and there's a hint of ceramic tightness in there, could use a bit more sag.

But thats nit picking, closer than I and most of the forum bros will ever get.
I remember reading a post in a really old thread where somebody said that tone can actually be affected by your fingers? Could that possibly have something to do with it? It was ages ago...I can try and dig it up if I really search.

That would be a fun amp to own.

I like Ed's heavy tone on the new CD, but it would be cool to hear all his tracks reamped with that exact Rockstah tone, and see how it would sound with the new songs. And his signature Frankenstrat, of course.

Now that is really really close. Like crazy close. I bet if Ed played through it that it would be 100%. That's always the missing ingredient.

I have a feeling if Ed had dialled back the bass and mids and upped the treble on the new CD he would have got closer to the "classic" Ed tone.
The whole CD sounds bass and mid heavy to me, but I still like it.

Hehe...variac'ing my ass. This is pretty much spot on, or at least I've never heard anyone get as close.

I suspect more than a few people here will pickup up a few Super Distortions after this one.

I dont actually think the tone is THAT close to Eddies to be honest (not the really early stuff anyway, the Mean Streets part was VERY close though), but the playing is so good, and theres so much reverb that it ends up sounding a lot like Eds early stuff.

It's a little tighter, but honestly I think it sounds better than any van halen guitar tracks I've hears isolated. Search VH guitar iso tracks on youtube. His sound sucks without the band if you ask me!

I was very disappointed to hear "ERUPTION" in ISO form, did not sound as good? is that because to make the track ISO you lose something?

Most guitar tones 'without the band' are not that great because the lows are scopped out so much to allow room for the bass and kick drum. Mids are tamed to keep out of the vocal's way too. It is all done so that it will sound good together.

In a room alone, most guitar players fill the bottom back in and round the sound out so that it is a tasty 'stand alone' tone.

Really? I mean... I don't think a guitar track has to absolutely suck ass on it's own just to punch through. There's plenty of songs where the guitar will play by itself for a bar or two before the band comes crashing in and it's not like anyone says "wait a minute, that's secretly terrible!" Some guitar players are really good at selecting a tone, some aren't. Some engineers are really good at making a guitar sound fit in while still sounding mighty and some do all kinds of weird things to it to try and make it work.
