I don't chase VH tone

Re: I don't chase VH tone

the player in the OP is awesome
i think there's a bit too much gain tho... but i'm by no means a VH expert either

Re: I don't chase VH tone

That's really good, really close.

I listened to it a few times, twice with nice headphones. I feel like the same rig/guitar with a '59 or a '78 would be closer, the front end sounds just slightly too pushed, and there's a hint of ceramic tightness in there, could use a bit more sag.

:cool2:

He is using a super d on that track and we are at this moment debating on IF eddie used a ceramic on the 1st record or the A2 78?

Everyone went apes**t over the DSD because it pushes the plexi into more gain but eddie may have used a A2 PAF type(78 wind) and pushed the amp with something else.
The guy mark(rockstah) that did that clip made others with the same modded plexi but he used a duncan 59 and a darkburst, and it sounded even better to my ears.
Here is another guy using a duncan CC and a bray 4550 amp

and here he uses a EVH frankenstein pup

I don't think there's a rock guitarist out there that hasn't loved the brown sound at some point, but I wonder how long you can ride the nostalgia before you get jaded by drunk and sloppy Eddie.

There are definitely players out there that have never let fame get to their head that I admire for more than tone alone, for me that rock god would be Paul Gilbert.

Re: I don't chase VH tone

^^ Paul Gilbert is an awesome guitarist/musician, and certainly one of the more recognizable players in the virtuoso soloist genre, but I wouldn't call him a rock God of the caliber that EVH is.

Drunk or not, very few rise to that level of iconic stardom.

Re: I don't chase VH tone

^^eh doesn't stop Eddie from being the douschiest of the dousches at some points.

I don't put Gilbert in the same class either, but he's still a better person.

Re: I don't chase VH tone

See this is WHY others get all bent out of shape over the VH threads, who the F**K cares what eddie was like as a person, the guy changed rock guitar period! Now back to talking JUST ABOUT THE GEAR!:banghead::angryfire

Re: I don't chase VH tone

I don't chase VH tone, but even when I hear this stuff it makes me want to go learn it and buy up EVH stuff... maybe Eddie is really the Pied Piper? I would have loved to see Van Halen back in the late 70's early 80's but I wasn't born or was way too young.

Re: I don't chase VH tone

Not a bad VH1 tone, but yeesh..thats even too much reverb for vh1.

What is a 1983 reissue amp? Did he mean 1987?

The real star of this vid is the dude playing, not pups or amp mods or bad reverb.

I'm not a Van Halen nut like everyone else. I don't think he is an amazing guitarist. But that being said, I like the band, and Ed is a tone genius. This video sounds the closest to the isolated tracks.

Re: I don't chase VH tone

I don't always chase Van Halens' tone.

But, when I do...

I get sidetracked by the frosty 12-pack of gleaming green Dos Equis bottles sitting in my fridge and forget about what the eff I was doing...

Re: I don't chase VH tone

Seriously, guys, you just need a DiMarzio Super Distortion loaded superstrat, a Peavey Vypyr Tube amp and a 12-pack of Dos Equis. You won't sound EXACTLY like EVH, but you won't care, either...

-----

EDIT:

Actually, I just found these settings for early EVH on the Vypyr

6505 (Green)
Tube Screamer setting 1 (minimum) & 5 (12 noon)
Pre Gain near max
Lows @ 1:00
Mids @ 11:00
Highs @ 12:00
Post Gain @ 1:00

(Delay, Reverb, Flange to taste)

...now where's my Dos Equis?

I get his older tone with my YJM plexi and i also get it with a old MIJ zoom 9030 half rack with headphones. I have gotten his tone with a$99 marshall MGdfx15 a $50 crate,a vypyr(very similar settings to yours),a ADA MP1 rig,a VHT amp, and last but not least a old original 5150 combo that i wish i had never sold!!!!:banghead: That one was sweet, best 5150 combo i every heard to this day.the guy i got it from did some Mod or trick to it and it screamed classic VH with any pup.:approve:

Re: I don't chase VH tone

Eh it was pretty plain written....
Guitar players always tries to find too pretty tones...not to harsh and all that smooth crap...
While about 90% of the time something rather ugly does the job down to the last letter...
