I dont know what to do about my amp

Frito's Better Half
my GA-30 is driving me crazy. I dont know what to do with it, as I am the most amp illiterate person in this forum. I dont know what kind of tubes it needs, nothing. Someone said something about a rectifier tube, but I dont know what a rectifier is. Nor do I know how to find out if the caps are swollen :wrf: I emailed KCA tubes, and he said to expect to pay about $150! $150 for 6 tubes. Jesus H. Christ! I'm 17, I mop floors and wash windows for money, I cant just pull $150 out of my ass! If I had known that a great sounding tube amp (I think) would cost this much, I wouldnt have accepted it from my grandfather. someone help me.

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

give the amp to me!!!!!!!!! But really if you cant fix it put it aside and when u have the cash repair it

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

Jesus "Hoobastank" Christ of course :)

Trust me bro, you don't NEED NOS tubes. Don't buy the bull that tube amps need the old stuff to sound good. Output tubes aren't cheap, but preamp tubes are pretty inexpensive (unless you need 9 like me for my amp).

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

You don't even know that it needs tubes. You are going to have to bite the bullet and let a qualified amp tech have a look at it, there is no other option. He can tell what it'll cost to fix it and if it's more than you have wait until you have it. Whatever you do, respect your grandfather by respecting the amp. Best of luck to you.

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

If it's an old amp, the caps are likely need replacing. That'll be another hundred or two.

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

I agree respect your grandfather and respect that aMP! its a vintage amp so it demnads respect man.

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

im respecting it. dont worry. Its just I ask for advice and guys just start throwing everything they know at me. They have a really bad habit of doing that over at the FDP.

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

How about this, where is the cheapest place to get 6v6 tubes, 5y3, 6sj7's, and a 6sc7? I dont care what they are, or who they come from. I just want this to workj.k

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

You should take it to the best tech in your area and just have it checked out. (If you really know nothing, as you say.) Good luck! Lew

beandip-
Don't get too flustered here. You keep telling us you want the amp to work, but from what you've posted you say you don't know anything about amps. You'll have to take it to a tech, that's the bottom line. You can't just plug in some new tubes and expect everything to be okay. Going the half-a$$ route is only going to hurt the amp's prospect of being a classic, workable piece of equipment. You could end up doing substantial damage to it. This amp needs TLC and you must respect that, and your grandfather too, as others have suggested here. If you can't afford to do that now, then you're just going to have to put the amp aside and save up until you have the money to do it. You sound like you have a lot of energy. Try using that energy in earning a little more money somehow to get this amp of yours up and running properly.
Those are just the cold, hard facts that you'll have to accept.

Re: I dont know what to do about my amp

I sent it out today, the amp gets shipped to conroe on monday. I dont know how I'm going to afford this. I'm hoping my gramps will cover it. I dont know.
