A semihollow...

I'm no stranger to a 335..but it's been 15 years plus since I had one in the arsenal...

I was at the local shop last night, and they had a bunch...some Ibanezes, Epiphones, a Satin Gibbo 335, PRS...

Amazingly enough the Ibanezes were completely and utterly dead tonally & physically. High dollar or low dollar...didn't matter... Sounded like rubber bands on a broomstick.

They had a couple korean/chinese Epis with dogears (sheratons I guess) and a Dot with the natural flamed top.

Those $600 Epis had more resonance and tone than anything else by far. All 3 were excellent.


Hmmm....iron maiden on semi-hollow? I used to love the looks I'd get playing metal on the 335 I had :D

Also played a very nice Epi LP std (MIC), and a MIJ Epi Elite SG. Biggest differences was just in the quality of the switch and the pups. Otehrwise that MIC Std was every bit as good as the MIJ.


Anyway I guess this totally random post of mine was more of a plug for those Epis than to discuss my GAS...def impressive for the $. They are making great strides compared to a few years back.

I'm right there with ya on the quality of the Epi's these days. We've both said the same thing before. They just get written off so fast because they're made overseas. But the truth is, they are a solid instrument with some great tones available. Every time I pick up my Std Plus LP I smile. The thing just has a great vibe.

I dig their semi-hollowbodies. Nice and comfy with a nice rich tone. Imagine what a set of A2P's or PG's would sound like in one of those?

Frank Hannon plays one. Nobody would tell HIM they are not HIM :27: :laugh2:

They are def a good value...especially with the price drop on the Les Pauls...now they are more in line with other imports, and the quality is good. Just need a pup swap..maybe a switch and a setup. Even the rosewood is pretty nice on most of them...I'm saying that compared to other Korean/Chinese guitars. MIJ/MIA def have them beat there.

Brit...I wanna say the sticker was around $1800 (US) for that satin 335.

That price drop on the Les Pauls ticks me off. I payed a lot more for mine a year and a half ago. Still worth it though to me but man, what savings now. Quality going up and prices coming down isn't something you see everyday either.

true dat. The Ibanez's were put together EXTREMELY well..I just could not believe how dead they felt and sounded. Like plywood. The Epis were put together almost as well but had ridiculously better acoustic tone and resonance. I looked last night at MF and the Epi Dot 335 or whatever is only $400!! :smack: Local shop is usually right in line with them $-wise on guits.

Just the difference in quality I saw in these compared to the ambertop LP Std + I had is worlds better (that guitar sounded and played great, but was sloppily put together). Thes semis were better than my SpaceAce as well.

Marilyn Manson's bassist played a semihollow. Looked just like an ES 335, but was a 4-string bass.

Play as much Maiden as you want on it Jeff. If I can play Maiden on the ocarina, you can on a semihollow Gibson.

I am very happy with my Epi 335 dot . . . it's a great, resonant guitar with a nice neck. It also does the occasional cover of Crazy Train without any problem . . .

They don't make them anymore but I have a Gibson ES-333 that I just love. It is basically a 335 with a satin finish, no pickguard, cheaper pups and a control panel on the back for easier access to the electronics. You can find great deals on them on eBay. I moded mine with 50th anniversary Seth Lovers, and polished the satin finish out so it is now gloss. It's a great axe.

They replaced the 333's with the Satin 335's, but the satin 335 does not have neck binding which just looks strange to me.

I bought an ES-135 because I wasn't sure I wanted to spend the money on a 335 at the time. I don't regret the purchase one bit, between the hollowbody and the P-100's, it's a whole 'nother beast.

I never understood why 335s were so expensive. They are made of laminate after all (and does that mean that they aren't carved, but steam pressed?).

I've also always wondered what kept foreign made 335s from being good, I guess the answer is nothing :smack:

I've definately thought about a Bigsby but I've never really looked into it.

A tonally dead Ibanez? Get outta town!

I'm with you on the Epis, most of the 90's ones I've played were lousy but lately it seems they've been stepping up the quality. Played a Epi LP not long ago that I liked better than a lot of the Gibson models I've tried.
