I got my mesa and my explorer

well, i got my mesa (single rectifer 50w head) before my guitar came. i used my sg with duncans and it sounded amazing with hardly any noise/feedback. anyway my explorer came and today i tried it, it sounds really good but i can't play at gig volumes without terrible feedback/hiss. is it because of the stock gibson pups? if so, what would you guys recommend for really high-gain playing?

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

Congradulations on that! If you want balls to the wall high gain metal - grab a pair of DDs.

I was going to suggest the same. :)

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

Something is wrong with your pups, if you bought that guitar new, bring it back and get a different one. I have never heard that out of any gibson.

it was 'like new' on ebay :( i was thinking maybe a JB?

Your Explorer shouldn't be squeeling or hissing if it's a late-model '76 Explorer. Mine never did. The factory pickups are designed for higher gain settings.

As for the SD 'JB.......I had a late 70's Hamer Standard (Explorer) with a mahogany body and neck. I had a JB in the bridge position for quite a while. It sounded massive, and still allowed the tone of that big ol' chunk of wood to come through relatively uncolored. It crunched through my modded '78 Marshall SL100 real nice, but still sounded fat when the volume was rolled back for cleaner stuff.

A JB/Jazz would be marvelous! Don't put a 59 in with a DD or JB though, they won't be balanced at all. It'll sound good with one and super thick with the 59, or good with the 59 and thin with the other.

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

True, the JB and 59 are two different..pickups, the jazz and jb are better paired, like in the new Schecter c1 classic

I wish someone would have told me that before I got my jb/59...

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

Why does everyone have to keep talking about explorers... I can't wait to get my Hamer Standard!!!! :laugh2: :laugh2: :laugh2:
Oh, and about the feedback maybe you should try switching the pup first. I still can't decide if I want the invader or distortion. I don't know if I want alot of chuga chug sound alot the time, from what I have hear the the invader gives alot of bottom end.

True, but they are very dark I don't like the loss of clarity. They are a one sound type of pickup. However, my friend has put them in the bridge of all his guitars, so some people love em'.

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

I'm gonna try lowering the height of the pickup before i do anything else, hopefully that will solve the problem. a good possibility is i don't know jack about good settings for a high gain tone on the mesa yet either.

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

I've never had much luck period with gibson bridge pups that werent 40 years old ;)

I would suggest a custom for the bridge and prolly either a jazz or PG for the neck. Custom's sound great in the bridge of Explorers/SG/Pauls. At least through Marshalls.

For a Recto (congrats!) you may want to go with something warmer than a custom though. Depends on what you want.

You better tell Hamer.......the '59 neck/JB bridge has been one of their magic combos for many years. I've had a few sets mounted in various guitars, and they sound perfect together.

The JB or the C5 would suit your style very well, lot's of chugga chugga and crunch.

I don't like the '59/JB combo either, too much of a different voicing in the pickups.
I found Eq' ing very difficult, either the JB sounded too trebly (or should I say high-middy?) or the '59 sounded to dark and muddy.
That is pretty much the experience I've had with that combo.
What's the secret?

Re: I got my mesa and my explorer

I don't like my Custom/59 combo in my LP studio. Too much of the 59 whatever the settings when I use the middle position of the switch.
Go to swap for a jazz I guess.
