I have tried so many over the years. I see a few posters ask about DiMarzio's on this board.

The first one was the double cream super distortion. I had one of the first few made when they first came out publicly. He was winding them for certain friends first.

They weren't too bad. But next was his PAF and that sucked. I used Gibson T tops in the neck and his SD's in the bridge of my Les Pauls.

All through the 70's and some into the 80's and 90's I have tried DiMarzio pickups and ended up selling them or giving them away. I worked for a dealer and got them at cost yet I stuck with Duncans. I never got the guitar to sound right with a Dimarzio. It was always missing something and actually made the guitar sound cheesy for lack of a better word.

I will say I liked the Tom Holmes PAF's and Fralin strat pups I used.

But Duncan's are the best for the money and they make almost anything you need.

He should really sell the Brobucker as a standard pup, it's great. Also the tapped version of the Antiquity Texas custom hot bridge strat pup, MJ made me three.

The Duncan humbuckers are great pickups and easy to change the magnets or even make hybrid designs by changing coils.

So in my opinion you can get any sound you want using a Duncan of some kind.

I just felt like writing this because I felt like it...:omg:

I am in a weird mood and reminiscing about the past.

Everytime I plug one of my guitars in I love the way those Duncans sound, just the way I want without exception once I found the right one. Some I had to modify some are MJ Custom shop, some stock out of the box. Some like the Stag Mag I could not get to sound good.

I live on Staten Island and have a lot of mutual friends of Larry.

In about 1975 I met a guy who worked for him at a gig. I called him at the shop and asked him if he could make me a strat pickup like a humbucker with one coil on top of the other. Yes a stacked strat pickup, it was my idea at the same time DiMarzio was working on it. Although I didn't know it at the time.

Well, the guy yelled at me over the phone and said never call him, that I was some type of spy. He said all types of other nasty things to me too. That's a true story.

Anyway, before you even think about a DiMarzio try a Duncan or two.

How's that? Do you think they'll hire me now?:newangel:

Just kidding.......

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Just voicing my opinion from trying them since the 70's and not liking any other than the original super distortion.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I do hate there humbuckers and single coils, but I think dimarzio makes great single coil sized humbuckers

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Every HS series I tried squealed.

I A/B'd the virtual vintage with a set of single coil Fralins and there was no comparison, the Fralins sounded much better. I even thought the Fender noiseless sounded better.

But what really pissed me off about DiMarzio is that he had the gaul to patent the double cream humbucker.

I love double cream pickups and have to pay more because you need to buy a cover when you get someone to make one for you.

See, I have my Dimarzio issues and it kind of came to a head tonight for some reason.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Hey Big Daddy:

Thanks for the post and thanks for your support of Seymour Duncan. However, since our competitors are not here on this board to defend themselves, I request that we treat them with respect. Constructive criticism is informative and fine.

But please try to avoid "slagging" the competition.

On the other hand, there's no rule against slagging Seymour Duncan. With Frank Falbo, Scott Miller, the other four admins and myself, we're well represented to defend the company and our products. But our competition isn't.

So please be aware of that.

Thanks!

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Not a big fan of Dimarzio's either.........I guess that's why all my axes are equipped with duncans.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Personally, I'm VERY happy with the Duncan/DiMarzio combination in my LP.

Blues Saraceno in the bridge, Virtual PAF in the neck.

They play very nicely together.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

the "ONLY" DMZ Pickup I've EVER liked is my Early 70's Super Distortion..other than that their pickups are lacking...."Mojo".....:D Thx Seymour For filling our Sound With "Mojo"

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Put the right pickup, in the right guitar, and it sounds good. Who made it's not all that important. I have good pickups by Gibson, DiMarzio, Duncan, WCR, and Bill Lawrence.

Larry DiMarzio pretty much paved the way for the aftermarket pickup market. When I needed a Tele pickup in '75, I bought one of his "Pre-BS" Tele pickups.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

A lot of dimarzios are great pickups, their SDS1 for strat was THE way to rock out on a strat back in the day. The FRED does stuff that is just amazing. Most of them have some hump in the mids somewhere - kinda their trademark - and maybe you just dont like that.

The 2 duncans famous for mids would be the JB & CC - but both do have some Duncan magic that gives them some extra vibe. But the FRED can run rings around 'em for certain styles and sounds.

But, yeah, it is irritating about them patents!

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I LOVE my PAF/SUperD Les PAul!!!!!! However -

Overall I prefer DUNCAN! An I have a T-Top/Distortion LP that is not for sale now or ever at any price.

And besides tone - which is enough, this forum is just another reason to love Seymour Duncan. Because, at the end of the day, it's all about tone (not copy rights on cosmetic BS like double cream). And if it takes a DiMarzio to get your tone, Seymour will let you post it here.

That is one impressive big swingin' set of cohonis!

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

For some reason Duncan naming confuses the crap out of me. I can rip through the DiMarzio line and remember what each one is and not get them confused, but Brobucker, trembucker, etc just doesn't stick in my head. CC, C, C5 now which sounds like what?

Maybe because the DiMarzio names are so distinct: Breed, Tone Zone, Norton, Fred, etc. I can remember those easy.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Quite honestly, there's about the same number of DiMarzio's that I like as I do Duncans. I'm running an Air Zone/Air Norton S combo in one guitar, SuperD in other (soon to be matched with a PAF I have), another with a JB, and I'm going put the Brobucker in another project axe.

There's things I like about some Duncans and things I don't like. There's things I like about some DiMarzios and things I don't like. In the end, it's what works for me no matter the maker. The only singles I like are Fenders, be it the Texas Specials, 57/62's or what comes stock. When it comes to humbuckers, it's what sounds best to my ear, and give me mids. :)

Each maker has their goldmine. Seymour has the JB. Larry has the Super Distortion. Oddly enough, both have a love/hate crowd. Both are great in the right guitar but awful in the wrong one. Both are sensitive to adjustment with the SuperD being a little pickier, IMO.

Everybody has different tastes. Use what works for you.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Dimarzio's alright. Both them and Duncan provide an array of good and interesting sounds. Right now I have a dimarzio at the bridge of a bright guitar for its thick, modern tone and rolled off highs, and a duncan in the neck for cleans and toneful soloing. Its about finding what works for your instrument.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I've not met a dimarzio I haven't liked yet, while I can only say the same for 1 or 2 duncans.

If the more vintage/harsher-harder kind of tone is more your bag, then yea I guess duncan would be better.
I even thought the invader had a very thick 1970's vibe too it.
