Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

IMO, I have to mostly agree with the Dimarzio/basswood statement.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Lew you hear what I hear.

Duncans are made with the correct parts the correct way to get the best possible tone.

I know enough about pickups and tone to make that comment. I have also talked pickups at length with Lindy, Wolf, Tom Holmes and Peter Florance.

There are parts and some new way to make pickups that IMO do not sound good.

I could go into much more detail but I promised I would not slam D pups anymore on this board.

Another brand I've tried and liked were the Van Zandts. I have a set of Van Zandt True Vintage Strat pickups that I like alot...although I like the Duncan Surfers and Fralin Vintage Hots just a little bit better. But the Van Zandts, particularly the older sets wound by Mr. Van Zandt himself, can be excellant.

I don't own a single Dimarzio pickup anymore. I was offered a DiMarzio dealership but couldn't put an order together...there just wasn't anything I got that excited about or really wanted to stock.

And that whole thing about Dimarzio trademarking dual cream paf style humbuckers so that Seymour and others can't produce them without hiding the dual cream coils under unsoldered nickel covers seems mean spirited. Dimarzio didn't invent that look...Gibson did it first.

The OP must have been drunk when he wrote his post, or he is misguided, ignorant, or maybe just plain dumb. :firing:

I wouldn't go that far. I can see never having tried pickups from a company that work for him.

These DiMarzio PAF pickups that came as original equipment in my Hamer are great.

Duncan's PAF style pickups sound different though. I have a parts Tele with DiMarzio PAFs, and another one with Duncan '59s, and they're both where they should be. I can't think of a reason to change the pickups in either guitar.

He stole mine too! j/k But I still use his pups!

My post was over the top to your over the top rant. Let's have a virtual beer over it. Sound good?

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

To me, Dimarzios sound like the way people from New York talk! (laugh!) Sort of honky and nasally and a little aggressive. You know: like the gal in that TV show the Nanny...or the way CC DeVille talks.

I just prefer the way Seymour hears things I guess...seems to be the way I hear things too. We seem to like the same sounds.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

My only experience with DiMarzio pickups were the Super Distortions that were in my LP Custom when I traded for it. Didn't like them at all and sold them back to the store owner who was creaming in his shorts over them. Bought a set of early production Antiquities and haven't looked back since.

My only direct experience with the DiMarzio company was back in the early '90's when I was looking to replace the pups in a '73 Strat I had. I called the company to get some info on particular pup models and was treated to an extremely rude person (probably Larry himslef). I hung up and discovered Duncans (thank God).

You should believe YOURSELF and trust your own tastes. Dimarzios are fine pickups...I just happen to prefer the way Seymour voices his pickups over the way Dimarzio voices theirs...we're just talking about personal preferences and why we prefer what we prefer...and making a few light hearted comments along the way.

If you want your guitar to sound like the voice of that actress in the Nanny, get some Dimarzios and go for it! (laugh!)

I guess, being from Detroit, Michigan originally and the original Gibson pickups being from Kalamazoo, Michigan, that I prefer that Michigan tone when it comes to humbuckers. And Seymour has captured that...:beerchug:

Yngwie's DiMarzios are made of asbestos, so they won't catch fire or melt.

I'm not sure if EVH's a good example. He changes his mind about what's best way too often. I think he's got a Duncan pickup on the market at the moment, doesn't he?

Eric Johnson's tough to please.

Lew

once again LOL!

so you are saying you find dimarzio's to sound congested?
some definitely are BUT not all of them
the virtual paf stuff is more open/clear :beerchug:
some dimarzio's are actually designed to have that boosted mid honk for floyd trems so the tone is not as thin with a floating trem
breeds
double whammy
super 3
and a few others are aimed at the trem guitars more so than a les paul or Prs

as fast as YGM is i would not doubt it
evh only used dimarzios on his ibanez shark(super distortion with a paf magnet) and his EBMM sig guitar custom wounds
but they got great tone
and as fas as eric johnson if he is hard to please well dimarzio must have done that since he uses a lot of thier stuff and praises it:beerchug:
