Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

once again LOL!

so you are saying you find dimarzio's to sound congested?
some definitely are BUT not all of them
the virtual paf stuff is more open/clear :beerchug:
some dimarzio's are actually designed to have that boosted mid honk for floyd trems so the tone is not as thin with a floating trem
breeds
double whammy
super 3
and a few others are aimed at the trem guitars more so than a les paul or Prs

I absolutely agree with you. One has to be really careful when choosing the right pickup for his/her guitar from Dimazio product line. Don't complain if you install the Tone Zone in a Les Paul and it sounds like mud. Dimarzio PAF range pickups are absolutely wonderful, although I'd swap all magnets to Alnico2.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I'm a New Yorker and you're right on about the nanny chick.

I hate that voice, I hear it all the time and it's the most annoying sound, almost as bad as nails on a chalk board.

I actually play Texas Blues Rock mostly now or just Freddie King stuff for my own enjoyment since nobody else likes the way I play.

I would say Dimarzio pups do represent the sound of post 70's music.

It's all about taste or lack there of.

I'm stuck in the past, the only music I like recorded after about 1975 is SRV.

My idea of good guitar playing is Steve Cropper, Freddie, even Jr. Brown.

I watched that Clapton guitar concert and country picker was the best of the lot with his tele, I forgot his name.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

DiMarios definitely have that "awww" sound, but that may be what yo are looking for.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I feel for Fran Dreshcer, she is annoying but....

Her house was broken into and she was raped in front of her husband at gun point.

The country picker was Vince Gill....blew away all the so called Rock Stars and great blues players.

He played cleaner, both technique and sound wise. Gill also did much more interesting licks and better placement and phrasing. He was the only one who sounded like he practiced.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I guess, being from Detroit, Michigan originally and the original Gibson pickups being from Kalamazoo, Michigan, that I prefer that Michigan tone when it comes to humbuckers. And Seymour has captured that...:beerchug:

Lew

I'm originally from the metro Detroit area and MY Michigan tone is a mix of DMZ, SD, EMG, and even "lowly" Parker Stinger humbuckers. So there! ;)

Agree 100% awesome picker. I use to make fun of those country pickers until I tried playing some of those licks. It's very hard to get those licks down.

Mucho respect to guys like Vince, Brent & Brad

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I think the virtual PAF pickup and the tone zone are both excellent. I have a dimarzio hot minibucker in my custom carvin right now. It's a killer little pickup too and it's got that sweet buttery midrange I love about those pickups and no huge logo on it. I think I'll break it out tonight as a matter of fact and work on getting the bridge pickup mounted correctly. I have a VHPAF sitting idle right now and I will not hesitate to throw it in a guitar if given a chance. It's also great with a nice midrange punch and a tad more heat than the VVPAF, but it's still sweet and open sounding with good cleans.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I have no Issue with Dimarzio´s pickups or the way they sound. They are for the most part not my bag but different strokes for different folks.

THe reason I refuse to purchase any Dimarzio products or new instruments outfitted with them lies solely with their questionable business practices, about which I have voiced my opinion often enough.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Just to say something nice about Dimarzio's, I do like Joe Satriani's tones on some things...especially his more melodic things like Always With Me Always With You and Flying In A Blue Dream. Also liked some of Boston's guitar tones which I'm pretty sure was a Super Distortion pickup. Never liked Al Dimeola's tones though, and he used the same pickup also in a Les Paul...right? I've owned three Hamer Sunbursts with Dimarzios...I liked them OK. I have not heard a Dimarzio single coil I liked at all though.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

My first DiMarzio was the X2N some 15-18 years ago. Man, that beast is HOT. Great sounding pickup though. I used Duncans a lot since then but always liked the sound some of my favorite players that used DiMarzios. These days I have a PAF, Super Distortion, Air Zone and Air Norton S (new this year). That Air Zone is one of my favorite pickups being made and I'm amazed at how much the Air Norton S sounds like the full-sized Air Norton. They did a great job with that one.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Yea, I first tried an X2N in the early 80s, and man, was that an eye opener. Used it for many years.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

To me, Dimarzios sound like the way people from New York talk! (laugh!) Sort of honky and nasally and a little aggressive. You know: like the gal in that TV show the Nanny...or the way CC DeVille talks.

I just prefer the way Seymour hears things I guess...seems to be the way I hear things too. We seem to like the same sounds.

Lew

The only way I could see them getting nasal is if you're playing through a fender with a boost. They're, for the most part, intended for high gain amps and lead playing.

Derek Trucks? Robert Randolph? Any of Eric claptons new(er than 1975) stuff? Not alot of people like moe., but they're unique IMO. I know alot of people rag on modern music, but nothing from '75 on sounds a bit extreme.

edit: By the way, I didn't know how incredible of a guitar player vince gill was until I saw the crossroads guitar festival footage on dvd. All I can say is wow.

That's an interesting combination of sentences. Make sure to post stuff like this earlier on, next time.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

I'll make this even more interesting and know I'm going to get flamed.

Most music after the mid 70's sucks. Including punk, new wave, metal of almost all kind, techno dance junk, did I miss anything. Although the Police were a huge cut above everybody else.

I would really rather listen to Louis Armstrong or Hank Williams than to the stuff after 1980.

I hate Bebop too, much rather listen Benny Goodman and other swing styles.

I saw a cartoon movie robots and one of them said it's a mixture of Jazz and Funk, they call it Junk.

By the way if y'all want to learn how to vibrato the right way, listen to Armstrong he had the best ever on a trumpet yet.....LOL.

Just a single opinion......Respected.

There's more bad music, than good music, in every era. I still remember how much garbage was piped our way in the '60s and '70s.

Half the problem these days is that the music industry mostly backs acts that sells to very young people, which is something that's always been true. But there used to be more diversity. And radio has been in the crapper for about 20 years.

There're a lot of great musicians out there these days. You just can't rely on radio or TV to find out about them.

Look into monster players like Redd Volkaert and Scotty Anderson.

Re: I hate DiMarzio pickups!!!!!!

Well Dimarzio has been one of the more progressive and inovative pickup suppliers. They have brought us the airbucker, the dual resonance, and virtual vintage inovations. Their noiseless singles, such as the Area series are very good, possibly better than many more famous, and much more expensive pickups of the type.

I don't think that there can be a "signature Dimarzio sound" with a such a diverse selection.

They may be known for the Super D, in the way that Duncan is known for the JB. I wouldn't judge either Dimarzio or Duncan based on those two alone, though.

Some of their shred era pickups with the "awwwe" sound might be what many associate with Dimarzio? I don't usually like it that much with the guitar alone, but it can be great in a band mix.
