I hate light guitars!

Re: I hate light guitars!

I strongly prefer heavier guitars. matter of fact, I wont even buy a light guitar. my last purchase was an explorer, and the new '16 models are only 4lbs. I found an older '05 model that weighed in at almost 9lbs. Huge difference, and that face that gibson cheaped out on the hardshell made it an easier decision for me.

Re: I hate light guitars!

I played a dozen LP's over a 40 year span all ranging from 8.5-10.5 lbs. I have a 1991 LP 9 pounder that I play for no more than 1 set. Usually when I play Gibson's I reach for my SG's. I do not have any back problems. I just feel more mobile with a lighter guitar and do not hear any tonal differences.

Re: I hate light guitars!

SG's are cool and they sound really fat. The thing I worry about, which always kept me from buying one, is that people say the necks are like rubber and the trussrods always need adjusting. Maybe that only pertains to the older ones, I have no idea. I've never even played one so I don't know. I'd love to someday own an SG Standard Reissue (from Gibson Custom) but I don't want to have to have to be messing with the trussrod every two days.

Never noticed truss rod issues with SGs, but they definitely have necks that are less stable than... pretty much anything else. Not in a way that negatively impacts normal playing, imo, but if you wanna do that pushing-on-the-headstock-tremolo thing, it'll approach Bigsby levels of warble.

There were a few issues in the 1960's with SG's necks, but I think that's all been addressed a long time ago. To make up for the thin body, a number have thicker necks; which to me is great. An SG with a skinny neck doesn't much wood anywhere for tone.

I dont think thats true. But some sgs have maple necks. The 70s tributes have a maple neck and baked maple board and I saw a firebird 70s faded at GC the other day that has a maple neck and rosewood board.
Im sure thye make an SG version. Both have minihumbuckers. Plus the 70s tribute I had had a quarter sawn maple neck which would be the most stable of cuts.

because I play sgs thats why i dont buy the heavy =tone. My sg sounds fat, almost as fat as an LP yet weigh 6.5lbs.

Re: I hate light guitars!

just imagine how heavy Pages double neck SG is.
hes not a big guy, hes a typical skinny Brit. Hes not short but not tall either.
Probably 5'10" and 120lbs when he was at the height of his H phase
(when he wore that captains hat and scarf dude was a toothpick)

Angus Young had a problem with the neck of his first SG. He had an early 60's model as a kid, and he said that he played it so much that the neck warped.

It would have warped regardless of playing it more or less. Just saying.

Re: I hate light guitars!

Early SG'S did have a lot of issues with neck stability, the tenon was really short and the location of the neck pup made it worse. So they moved the pickup back a little and made the tenon longer an solved most of the issues

If google is right then 120Lbs = 120 pounds = 54 Kg??? No way. 65 Kg (=143 pounds) IMHO is the skiniest for 177cm (=5'10)

Re: I hate light guitars!

My brother weighed 130lbs at 6'1" when he was in high school. He's a fat fsck like the rest of us now, though.

No, Pagey WAS that skinny. Perhaps at most he was 135 lbs during the H years (and not much heavier now!). He looked like a concentration camp prisoner. His height is listed as 5'11", although he looked much taller because of his rail thin frame. Plant was more solidly built, but likewise looked much taller than his 6'1" to me.

Re: I hate light guitars!

Guitars are tools. Go out to a construction site and watch the framers. Some like 8 oz. hammers. Some like 10 or 12 oz. Some guys like 10" blade chop saws. Others like 8" Skil saws, and some others prefer a 12" radial arm saws. All of them do jobs differently, and all of them have their place. None them are wrong. Same goes for guitars. If you like a 12 lb Les Paul and it gives you the sound you want...play it. If you prefer a 4 lb. Jackson JS Dinky, and it makes you wail like a rock star, right on! That's your tool.

I personally prefer a lighter guitar. But I'm still learning and that may change, who knows. That's why they make so many different types.

Re: I hate light guitars!

I played a 5lb carbon fiber guitar that was great. It came with SDs too.

Re: I hate light guitars!

I understand personal preference and whatever but I don't think a guitars weight is what makes it feel flimsy. I have a selection of guitars that range from just over 7lb to around 10lb and whilst they are all different non of them feel flimsy or poorly constructed. Quality is quality and generally you get what you pay for.

Re: I hate light guitars!

Lighter for me only due to the onset of arthritis in my back, slinging a 9lb Les Paul is a thing of the past for me now....
