I hate light guitars!

Re: I hate light guitars!

I've made a strat from Paulownia. Due to the super lightweight nature of the wood and its structure, it can only be a hardtail. Whole guitar is 5lbs 13oz. Still has a great full tone, and thats with a typical 5.8k strat pickup

Wow, nice! Can we see? Is it neck heavy?

Re: I hate light guitars!

I also didn't do any of the usual strat body contouring......mainly as I did still want to keep a bit of the mass there. Not really neck heavy at all. I hadn't thought of the balance until your post, but paid attention to that aspect as I had a strum just now.

You can probably see I'm a bit of a relic fan. I tried to keep it tasteful rather than the usual belt sander versions that seem to occur.

Re: I hate light guitars!

I've owned mostly Gibsons, and played in several bands with those. I also owned a Fernandez strat I'd probably lob off my third nut to get back, and today only own a Blacktop strat. There's pros and cons of all these, but weight has never been one. My take is, if you love the guitar, it could be 20lbs and you wouldn't care, but even if you have to play something else because of physical reasons, then that becomes a reason you love it better, because you still get to play guitar. I've b*tched about numerous instruments I've owned, but I've never had a single complaint about a guitar I connected with.

Re: I hate light guitars!

I've had a few heavy ones. Back when I played live, the heavy ones did start to hurt my upper shoulder where the strap goes across towards the end of the night, but it wasn't a show stopper. Mechanically, the greater the wood density is one of the several factors that contribute to how the vibrations dampen, but that's a whole other topic. Tonally, I can't say much because I've not compared two different tone wood guitars with the same specs on shape, electronics, and amps.

Re: I hate light guitars!

Wow, that is way unique- I like it!

Thanks!!

First guitar made with this wood.
I was a little worried about the super low weight (and of course 'damagability', solved by making it a light relic from the word go!). But the tonal response, especially in the low-end has surprised me. Of course it is a hardtail, so it is hard to isolate wood from other construction details tonally. But the overall is the important, and its not disappointing!
