I hate my tuners

I've got some sort of locking tuner on my PRS SE Custom 22, and they stink. It's really, really difficult to set them properly to get the strings changed, and they require a coin or a screwdriver to tighten them. I like the idea of a locking tuner, but these just work terribly. Any suggestions for replacement? And please include size, because I have no idea.

Re: I hate my tuners

My first locking tuners were as you describe...Grovers I believe.

Planet Waves tuners work great, they stay in tune, they look great, they are easy to use, require no tools, and they even cut your strings as you tune-up. I've got them on 5 or 6 of my guitars and have had absolutely no issues with them at all. Love 'em.

Re: I hate my tuners

Are you talking about gotoh h.a.p.m style locking tuners? Because you don't have to tighten them with the screw you just start winding and it locks itself in.

Actually i just looked at the prs locking tuners and they are different. Just replace them gotoh or sperzels imo.

Re: I hate my tuners

I made that mistake at first with the Gotohs, thought I had to tighten them with a screw driver or coin. They drove me nuts!!! Then I realised that the tuners would start tightening themselves once I had spun the key a few times, and man I was glad I realised that. So easy to use now. Felt like such a dumbass!!!

Re: I hate my tuners

Try loosening the small screw on the end of the key. It might be over tightened to where it's hard to turn the tuning key. I have Shaller locking tuners on my Fender and they were like yours until I adjusted these 6 little screws........good luck!

There's only one screw on the top of the tuning peg. It covers the whole head. I'll take a picture this afternoon.

The Gotoh lockers ( Washburn labelled) came stock on my mid 90's Washburn MG's and now I'm sold on them. Used them all including the PRS tuners ( never had any issue with the PRS tuners or used a screwdriver to lock mine, the same ones you should have are on my Custom 24) and the Gotoh set up IMO is the best out there. Just never use a screwdriver to lock them just pull the sting through tighten and go. On the restring I just use a coin in the slot to hold the lock and break it loose when I back off the tuner and the string pops right out. I can change strings lightning fast stretch once and they set. These are ROCK solid in stability on the Washburns with the Wilkerson even beating the heck out of the bar!

I made this mistake for the longest time too haha.

Now, it's super awesome. Hold the string while I tighten upwards and when the tuner starts moving that's when the string is locked in. Love my gotohs now.
