I hate walking away from a great amp deal but...

My local store has a Fender Roc Pro 1000 for $150. If it was the combo, I would have left with it but I need another 100w head like I need a hole in the head. I do need a powerful combo I can move easy and the Fender Roc Pro 1000 1x12 would fit the bill, but alas, this is the head. The amp was in pristine shape and sounded freaking amazing. I have loved these amps since they came out.

They were Fender's answer to the VS series. They were a hybrid solid-state amp with a tube preamp. They are loud as hell and have great tone from crunch to gain-driven tones. Malmsteen was a big fan of them in the 90's using them at his clinics and theater gigs. He also used them in the studio.

Very cool, I must have completely missed these. I always liked hybrid designs, too.

Sometimes walking away from a good deal is a difficult thing - because you know it's a good piece of gear and that the price is fantastic. However, at some point logic/restraint has to kick in and you ask yourself that question, "what am I going to do with it?" I've had to do that myself a number of times. Just yesterday, I had to talk a buddy down from buying a vintage Roland Space Echo. It wasn't even a ridiculous deal - but they're rare and it's in great shape. But I asked him, "What are you going to use it for? That's basically a studio tool, and you're not a studio/session/recording player. So it'll sound cool and you'll jam on it for a bit and then it'll go on your shelf. So is there any better use of that money that you can think of in terms of what you want to acquire for gear?" He came around and agreed.

You could flip it for ~$700, $600 if you want a quick turnaround.

That's the thing, I wouldn't flip it, I'd keep it.
What I should do is look into how much it would cost to repair the one that I have sitting in my garage. A few years back, it let the smoke out of a resistor, so I pulled the chassis out of the combo that it was in and made the remaining cab into a closed back 2x12. So I would have to have it both repaired and housed in a head.

Someone is selling one of those Roc Pro heads locally for $300.

Well worth it but a bit high. They can be had for under $200 in most cases. Send the seller these GC links and see if they will drop the price. Seeing you gig a lot a Roc Pro would make an inexpensive, light and powerful backup. The are a very good pedal platform and Yngvie approved.

Keep in mind $300 is in our silly Canadian monies. Probably closer to $200 USD.

I had one of those in the late 90s into early 00s, including the matching 4x12 cabinet. Can't say that I recall much about how it sounded, but then again I was also guilty of tossing a multi-effects pedal in front of it. I eventually traded-in the head but continued to run the 4x12 with a DSL50 for several years. I would have never guessed they would have commanded a couple hundred bucks on the used market.

Just saw this thread again.
Still kicking myself for not picking up that Carvin.

You might kick yourself again. When you said you don't need another large amp, were you talking about size or wattage? If wattage the X100B has a switch to go from 25, 50 or 100 watts.

What does the line out on these amps sound like?

The last time I used it, it was noisy. My Marshall have been acting finicky, so I have been using the Carvin for rehearsals. It sounds glorious. I am going to play with the line out a bit more, to see if I can get it quiet. I might use the Carvin @ 25w in the studio if I can.
