I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

It would required me getting rid of some stuff, but I'm guessing it would be worth it. I've never played one though. I did, however, love the model of the Dumble ODS on the vox valvetronix (my fav setting) and I have played Andy Fuch's version of the ODS and it kicks.

Not really in the market for such an amp, but it might be a one of a kind investment.

Things I'd have to get rid off....

Heritage 535 Goldtop
Martin d-15
Seymour Duncan ESP Strat
a tweed Victoria cab waiting for my next tweed amp project
Sovtek MIG50
and several pedals that I really dont' use much anyway.
Ampeg Jet J12T (I have let my son use it, but I'd give him that 5e3 I built instead)

I'm not giving up the Bad Cat, nor the 58RI LP, nor the PRS. But I would be giving up 3 guitars, 2 combos, one cab and a slew of pedals. Hmmm.... what to do.

I'll be in CA in a few weeks and will get to play it. Not sure though whether it's worth the effort. Just have to play it I guess then decide if it's worth it.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Wooooooo thats alot of great gear to get rid of for "1" piece!
I think i'd regret it after 2 weeks of owning the new "gas"
My room would look very empty! :)

But once in a lifetime chance on something you really want.......
Tuff call!!

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

well, I'm pretty impressed that you even found one!

I'd love to play through one some day, but my cut off point for amps is somewhere below $10K, unfortunately

I'll be interested to hear how you like it.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

It's a 'prestige' piece. I can't say I wouldn't want one, but it sucks up a lot of finances for what it offers. As an investment, it's good, but I could see you cashing out of it within a year. Maybe you should just keep your favorite toys around you instead of an esoteric investment amp. It's a cool toy to have, but you could surround yourself with far more attractive toys for the same price. Just think...if you cashed out of some of those toys you mentioned, it would free up enough money for 4 different boutique and vintage amps!

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Get it!!!!!! YOu won't regret it!!!!! After you have it a while you will probably unload the Bad Cat too!! I don't think you can find a better sounding Amp!!

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

i have heard one in person and theres NO way i would unload all that stuff for it....... sure, its a nice amp, but its not any better than any classic amp like old marshalls, voxes, fenders......etc. It does have its own tone, and they are very rare, but i dont think i would sacrifice all that great tone for one amp.....sure the price is alot, but i dont think it has any significance here, is no way is it worth $8-9 grand more than other vintage amps tone wise.......its great tone, but i think you can be just as happy with a 1000-1500 amp......

guess its just my opinion though

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

If I were you, I'd get the amp. They sound great and the resale value is excellent. You're keeping the right guitars and unloading the second string stuff. For me, its always been quality not quantity; go for it!

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

It's kind of like a 'burst at this point, if you can swing you do it.

If you're up for it you can easily make money renting it to local studios for specific sessions. High end studios often have deals set up for special pieces lie that to be available for the right clientele. A Dumble is something more people want than could ever afford or justify but a rental for a recording is always a possibility. If you really get into the gear you could set up an SIR type of service.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

What I would do is go and play it and either get it out of your system and then see if it lives up to all that it is claimed to do for you, if you just got to have it then seriously think what you can liquidate easily to raise the funds for it. I seriously doubt that would get as much pleasure out of the amp then you do with some of the gear that you currently have.

FWIW I have played a Dumble and whilst it was very nice there is no way that it was worth the $14k that was being asked for it. They are all individually built for customers and specially voiced to their requirements. I think you may also have great difficulty in finding anyone who wants to service that amp as Howard is not doing them anymore as fas I am aware.

PS - I might make you an offer on the Heritage 535 Goldtop though!!

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Scott... do that deal! It's a rare, prestigious amp as others have said. You'd be able to get your money back no problem. Best of all, you're only getting rid of some "third tier" kinda gear. You're keeping your good guitars, so why not take the plunge?

It's an amazing amp and it's insanely hard to find so you'd be crazy not to do it! I know losing that Heritage is gonna be tough, but after that small sacrifice, look at what you'll be getting ;)

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

As long as you are not selling anything from the "A-list" I can see why you are temped to do it. If you really think you don't want what you are selling, go for it! I think as we get older we are less and less willing to settle for stuff that gets us close but no cigar. I might line up for the Ampeg.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Ok. My final advise. Grind that poor sucker till he's in tears. Snake it for as little as humanly possible. Then, enjoy it for a few years, while having it listed for top dollar, the entire time. Eventually, the right profile will come along, hand you $14,000 for your $7000 investment. You make around $7000, had fun using it, and now have a check for $14,000. As long as the wifey knows nothing, you can go shopping for more toys.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

i think gearjoneser has the right plan play it buy it sell it down the road for mo money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! good luck

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Not looking to buy a Fuchs, but a Dumble. I have only the Fuchs to compare it to since I've played the Fuchs and not ever played a Dumble. Bottom line is it's a ton of cash and I'm not sure it's really worth it unless for investment purposes.

Also, that Heritage 535 is not third tier by any stretch. :) Not sure I can part with it anyway. But my gear lust reared its ugly head last night.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

A toughie. If you do it, look into that whole high-end rental thing. I've recently been thinking about doing that, as there are a bunch of great amps no-one has down here. Only one Soldano SLO in the country, for example...

Go and play it and get it out of your system, that's what I do when I have a lust or severe gas for something. You often find that the reality is a lot different then what you imagined it to be at least you can say you have seen it played it and got the tee shirt as well.

I never imagined that 335 was 3rd tier by the way but just trying to help you as it was the first on your list of what to get rid of and trying to stake a claim before anyone else!!:saeek:

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

When I said third tier I was referring to most of the stuff he would be selling (old pedals etc.). That's why I mentioned further down on my post that losing the Heritage would be tough (because it's an awesome guitar), but definitely worth it to have such a magnificent collectors piece ;)

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

whats the good in collecting? (and if collecting is your true love, then i by no means am bashing you at all).... but i myself buy stuff to play it, and i think Scott (could be wrong) follows that sort of thing too.......

it is a magnificent collectors piece.......but for a player, its just a real nice amp, but not anymore special than any of the other vintage and boutique amps, while costing multiple thousands dollars more......idk, i just dont see the big deal about it.....

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

if u play it and love it, id say go for it, assuming none of the peices you are giving up hold real emotional value, or are really special, they can all be replaced somewhat. if u love the dumble, thats awesome, make sure to write me into your will ( :) ), if not, lets say u dont like it after 6 months, sell it, and u can buy back most everything u sold, and maybe make a few bucks, or buy new stuff thats differnt than tghe old.... but than again, this is an unusual situation, dont let the dumble be the one that got away, but than again dont let it be one of the pieces u sell. i dont think u can go wrong to be honest, go for it though ,you will never know if u never try (that is assuming u try it and love it)
