I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Sometimes, you gotta realize you only live once. As long as you're smart enough to buy it at a price that's low enough to easily liquidate at a later time, you can't go wrong. Now....if your son and his buddies steal your Dumble, you'll be forced to kill your own first born son. So, keep that in mind. LOL

Haha... that's one of the funniest things I've read. :D

How long before you can buy more gear if you go ahead with this?

What I would do is go and play it

They are all individually built for customers and specially voiced to their requirements.

good point ... I've read that, like any amp, they vary from one to another

That's a good question. I've slowly realized that I can find 95% or better of the Carlton/Ford Dumble tone by looking at a Two Rock or a Fuchs or something in the sub astronomically priced range.

I really dont' want to get rid of anything of my stuff that badly.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Scott, it would be interesting to hear the dumble - from what I understand (and others have said in this thread) they each sound different, I read an article in vintage guitar magazine by a guy who uses dumbles and he said he played through a number of them before finding the amp that fit his playing, then he had one made custom. I guess if you find the "one" then it's a miracle machine.

If your going to be in Southern California you might want to stop in at Tone Merchants and try out the Two Rocks - they are exceptional sounding amps and do the dumble thing pretty well, I particularly liked the Opal (and they sell for around $3K). He'll also have the Bad Cat in stock so you can compare the other amps with what your main amp is now. In addition, they have the menatone pedals you can test drive as well - who knows it might be just what your looking for??? Check them out on the web www.tonemerchants.com

What's a Dumble?

A very rare amp made by the very eccentric Howard Dumble. Used by SRV, Robben Ford, Larry Carlton and a select few others. Ridiculously pricey and quite rare. A true 'tone of the gods' amp, if the Robben Ford gig I saw was anything to go by.

Perhaps the holy grail of the boutique amp world.

I like that shop. Nice place. Weird hours. Hard to find.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

I think the only time he's open to the public is on Saturday but if you call or email Ed he'll make the time to be there during the week - then you have the place all to yourself and you can turn up as loud as you want!! I've lived here all my life and am very familiar with the area - I took me a half hour to find the damn place, I can only imagine what someone from out of town goes through.

Re: I have a chance at a Dumble ODS

Buy it only if you like the way it sounds. If you don't want to unload that kind of cash, drop some on a Line 6. Their "Clean" setting is based on a Dumble, and I guarantee that the majority of your audience will never be able to tell the difference.

Not looking to buy a Fuchs, but a Dumble. I have only the Fuchs to compare it to since I've played the Fuchs and not ever played a Dumble. Bottom line is it's a ton of cash and I'm not sure it's really worth it unless for investment purposes.

Also, that Heritage 535 is not third tier by any stretch. :) Not sure I can part with it anyway. But my gear lust reared its ugly head last night.
Scott,

just out of interest: where does one buy a Dumble? Serioulsy, I thought that they where "built-to-order" by Alexander/Howard D.? Did you find one in a shope or something like that?

thanks
