I have a Confession to make, I've never heard a tube Screamer.

I'll be honest...

You ain't missin' much!

Haha! Yeah, I remember when I got my first tube screamer and plugged it into a clean Fender amp at bedroom volume... I was scratchin my head wondering what all the fuss was about.

Most people use them to goose an amp that's already cookin or pissed. That's when you'll either love what it does, or hate what it does.

Well, I love my Pro Junior Cranked... SRV eh... i might have to try one of these out.

it'll make a cranked Pro Jr. sound pretty sweet!

Re: I have a Confession to make, I've never heard a tube Screamer.

I just got a keeley mod plus ts9 and it's pretty sweet. I stomp on it to boost my orange for leads or more gain when called for. With my amp cranked and the TS engaged, it kills. If you can, get a keeley TS or a spina modded one, but any TS will work with the right mods.

IMO, it is the only thing that makes my Hot Rod Deluxe sound good.

Any soundclick clips that you guys have would be appreciated.

There are a lot of Tubescreamers. You would be best to go spend some time in a vintage shop and play through some original ones. The TS9 RI is good but not great, the TS808 is much better, but cost about 100$ more. There is also a TS9DX (I think) which is a stock TS9 with a bunch of other features. Good pedal. I have a hot rodded TS9 that Stratdeluxer97 did for me and quite honestly I can never see a reason to remove it from my board. I also have a custom made "MONROE DRIVE" made by Xsissive. It is the most versatile tubescreamer I have ever used. it is based on the 808 circuit. I use this as well as my modded TS9 all the time.

Re: I have a Confession to make, I've never heard a tube Screamer.

Try a Boss SD1. Dirt cheap, fun pedals to try listening to and especially mod. 95% of the SD1 circuit is identital to the TS9/808.
I'm really not a TS fan at all. I prefer a more linear boost myself, and the pedal is a pretty bad overdrive unit for me.

Basically the only thing it offers for most people (including myself) is a cutting lead boost. That it does well because of its high mid spike. A lot of people don't like that mid spike, including me.

The gain the pedal procudes is also pretty nasal and not very nice to the ears... certainly not what I associate with tube amps. It may just be me though ;)

SRV did use a Tubescreamer... but I doubt his tone gives a good idea of what a TS can do. Or for me, CAN'T do :D

Re: I have a Confession to make, I've never heard a tube Screamer.

I think a tube screamer without a compressor is like coke without a downer.... I have analogman's silver modded TS-9 & when I use it with a compressor & that sniper GE-7.... oh lord. It's delicious. Listen to some Phish from 1993-1997. All those delectable tones Trey gets are from a CAE preamp, Groove tubes power amp, $10,000 custom hollowbody Languedoc guitar, & of course his TS-9's. I've yet to try Keeley's TS-9 mod, bout to this weekend. Stock TS-9s or TS-9s of any kind without a comp just dont do it for me.
