I have a desire, but not the budget for a five string

So I nipped to my local music store today to try a few compressor pedals, and the instrument they gave me to test the pedals with was a an Ibanez SR1805.
My own request, I admit it, as I have been considering getting a five string recently. Problem is I want one now. I could possibly stretch the wallet to one of the cheaper versions, which I'm sure would be very lovely, but I want one of these, and as it would not leave much change from a thousand UK pounds, I just don't have the cash.
Anyone want to do a bank job with me?

Do you need the five strings or just the extra notes offered by a low B string?

Re: I have a desire, but not the budget for a five string

Well we do a few songs that require dropping down to D, and a five stringer would bypass messing about.
I could get a D tuner fitted to one of my basses, but I do like being able to drop into that really low end every now and then.
I was surprised at how easy it was to get on with the extra string.

You could always restring one bass guitar to BEAD tuning.

I like the Hipshot Extender key. It is handy in trio situations. With the low string dropped by a tone, the lowest three strings form a one-finger root-fifth-octave chord.

Do you have pawn shops in the UK? Consignment/used music stores? I got my first 5 string, an Ibanez SR305, for $100 at a pawn shop. The strings and the bridge were a little rusty, but those were easy fixes.

Yes, we do.

Ant. When is your eighteenth birthday? I have a Warwick Streamer Pro S1 wide neck five string that I hardly ever use. :D

Yes, and bargains can be had. The nearest one to me has a seven string bass in at the moment, which is a little extreme for me :)

Not sure about my eighteenth, but I have a big birthday starting with a 5 coming up in a few years ;)

Just move into care-in-the-community sheltered accommodation. Worldwide rock 'n' roll superstardom and an animated character girlfriend await.

Find a used Yamaha. Way better then any Ibanez. I've got an amazing BB425X that I scored on Craigslist for $275!!!

Re: I have a desire, but not the budget for a five string

Look for an SR505, and try it out... fantastic sounding bass for the money, and usually fairly cheap used...

Re: I have a desire, but not the budget for a five string

Yes, and cheap can get. One of the areas close to the seven-string bass I have one right now, that's a bit extreme to me
