I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Peavey classic 20...

And it has a story (you can skip to the short review):

I went to check for amps in big shops today... been searching for one for a while. Went to a big store and they told me- sure, we have something for any taste...
And showed me to a huge wall of... solid state amps... :smack:

One of the clients in the shop tells me you should go round the corner, there's a guy who fixes amps there he might hae something for you. I arrive to two shops- a small guitar workshop (the owner is pretty famous here and makes good custom Fender copies- would be another thread soon :)) and the amp workshop that was on the next door. The guitar luthier tells me I might have something for you... calls a friend who brings the amp. I bought it for less then $200. Good for any tube amp isn't it?

Just amazing how it happend... coinsidence from start to finish...

So far I played it with a custom Strat and Tele from the workshop... both packed with vintage SD single coils (SSL-1 and STL-1), with an Epiphone Sheraton (not a bad guitar actualy) and with my Gibson Night Hawk...

The tone is very, very warm... much warmer then the Classic 30 I've played.
Tonewise, it reminds me of a Fender Bassman in a way. Maybe because it works through a 10'' speaker, maybe because of the tubes the guy I bought it from put in... don't know...

Well, that's it for now...

I'm going to play it some more... then post other thing... :laugh2:

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This story is even cooler because you're in Israel. I bet those things are real rare there. I've been wanting one of those ever since I heard of them. Nice score. Enjoy.

Great score !!

I have a feeling that someday I'm also going to luck out like you did. Seems like almost everyone else has. I'm waiting patiently.

ENJOY your find.

Dave

My thoughts exactly. Great score and cool story!

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks...

ArtieToo, You're right about Israel... There are guitar stores here without one tube amp in them... and common gear is sometimes priced way too high...

I played the amp for a few hours now... me and a friend are trying to write songs fast because we were offered a gig (good results but we do it too slow)... so here's some more about the amp:

The tone controls have a pretty small range, compared to other amps I had/played... the tone stays pretty sweet no matter how much treble I add...

I found a really nice area where the Amp goes from warm cleans to smooth driven tone just from rolling the guitar volume up... that's where it shines IMO. The more distorted settings are also pretty cool but I'm going for the cleaner tone for now...

If I'll stick to that decision, I'll have a reason to experiment with distortion pedals... unless the Big Muff (the only distortion I have now) would be a perfect match, I'll have to do more shopping...:fingersx:

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

GREAT SCORE . . .

. . . i too would like to get a C20, but i do not know anyone in SA that actually owns one.

ENJOY MATE !
;)

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

really good small amp u have there.
i used to have a classic 30, but i had to get rid of it coz i moved out of the states. could only bring 1 amp back (my crate bv was the preferred choice).

i wish i could get a classic 30 here now as well. but too bad its too rare in singapore, and getting one from the states would mean i gotta change the whole power transformer inside.. :(

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SirJacked and Ken... not leaving in the US is really hard on gear shopping, isn't it?

I wonder if guys from the USA know what it's like to come into a guitar shop and look at so many solid state amps you would never want to use...

Damn.

The gy in the big shop tells me in an almost sarcastic voice: I don't know why you are so set on tube amps...
He insisted on plugging me into a digital effects Laney toy... :smack:

It's the 3rd world of gear here... :laugh2:

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to have a Classic 20. I traded it towards a Classic 30 in 1995. The 30 was more versatile, but the 20 totally sounded better.

A Les Paul Standard, Vox Wah and Classic 20 - that combo will get you through any blues gig!

I also feel that the C20 sounds better then the C30... way sweeter.

Funny, you almost nailed my setup- I use a Vox Wah and a Gibson (a Nighthawk not a LP...). Lately those are the only pieces of a gear I own and like...

well, its not that the selection is really bad. if i really want it, the shop could place and order for me since they are the sole distributors in this country. however bring sole distributors, they some times mark up the price by 2-3 times which is basically trying to rip you off...

imagine a roland jazz chorus 120 for $1,200 USD

I know what you mean! Thank God some shops here woke up and started bringing quality stuff!

All they care about is money! I know that they can hear a difference in the tone, yet they continue to order only "beginner's" amps just becasue there is a larger market for those.

Imagine? I think it's the tag price here...

Re: I have a new amp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can't get over how sweeeet it sounds with the Gibson :)

I'll go pedal hunting for a distortion and a reverb soon...
