I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing...

Re: I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing...

Looks awesome so far.

Just for future reference, you really don't need the silver undercoat when you're putting on a solid top color. It's more for transparent or candy colors. White undercoat is good.

Another word of caution: be very careful using a lacquer clear coat on top of enamel. It will cause the paint to crinkle. You'll have best chance of success if you make sure the enamel has fully cured first (then for good measure, give it another week). Then for your first two to three coats of clear, just "dust" it on very thin and let it cure fully between coats. Gradually increase the wetness of each successive coat.

Good luck, and have fun.

Re: I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing...

I used three full cans of the glitter spray, and I think I could have gotten away with two if I had used a matching undercoat. Until the last can, I had specs of silver in places, but this is a learning process.

I talked with tech support at both Minwax and Rustoleum, and both felt the two were compatible with the same precautions. I think being "consumer" rattle cans gives a wider margin of error. I let the silver dry overnight after two light passes, and then dusted the flake on over a couple of days. I sprayed light coats of lacquer until I had a good base and now have been laying on heavier coats. I think one more can will give me enough coverage to sand and polish.

So far, so good. Keep your fingers crossed.

It sounds like you're doing it right. It should turn out just fine.

Keep us posted with more pics as you go.

You are a rock star sir, even sans hair! Love the work and color.

Re: I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing...

These pictures stink, but it is coming along nicely. I think today will be the last day of spraying and the wait to polish begins.

Is a maple fretboard with matching headstock in it's future?

Maple yes, matching no.

I didn’t even remove the strings, just popped off the neck and bridge, then started painting. :p

All that's looking good! :headbang:

Re: I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing...

Blocked it out this morning and sprayed what I hope to be the final coat.

The Minwax lacquer is nitrocellulose and quite brittle. I suppose that is good for easy relicing, but bad for removing tape. You can see just how thin the total finish is here and where I wept some thin CA glue along the edge. I will sand/file that flush later.

That Sparkle reminds of these EKO's from the 60's.

Terrif. How many coats of lacquer did it take to be able to sand without sanding thru?

That is really killer!! Unique color and looks great with the black hardware!!!

Question for you.. In the picture where you said you blocked it out... Im assuming you sanded it right?? Im gonna ask what may be a dumb question... Why did you paint it and then sand it ? i could see primer and then sand. Just using the actual color as primer?

Again, that is really nice!!
