I have an Idea

You know how acoustics sometimes have up to 3 or four different woods that make up the body well what if the same thing was done with a electric guitar for example Mahogany body then down the middle a piece of Maple or Mahogany 1/3 Maple1/3 then ash 1/3. Maybe even put the Mahogany on the bass string side ash on the treble side and maple in the middle for the treble or which ever combo you would want. Im not sure if this has been done or not or if its even possible but just a thought I had after i was looking at a Martin that had a wedge down the middle of the back of it.

Pretty sure Carvin and a lot of bass manufacturers have been doing this for years:

The body of my Westone is made out of ash, maple and walnut. It sounds awesome.

Call me crazy, but I'd love to give that a try to see how it sounds. All things considered, I'm betting crap, but for some reason I love the look of it.

Same here, dude. I prefer the black and white one...

Although, I really don't like the transparent pickup bobbins. I'd throw some nickel covers on them, add a set of black mounting rings and call it a day.

Re: I have an Idea

I first contemplated that question back in 1982. One type of wood on one side of the body with another type on the other side. So 3 strings would be on one type and the other 3 on the other. For experimentation a person could have a block of wood with one type on one side with another type on the other with nothing between them. Use the seam as the center. Rought a neck pocket in each end. Rought it for 2 PU's so that the bridge PU rought would be used for the bridge position PU with the neck mounted in either neck pocket. So essentially it would have 3 PU roughts with the bridge mounted between 2 of them. Use individual bridges for each string for better separation. Set it up one way and record it. Then flip every thing around the other way and record it again. Doing it this way would help eliminate some of the varietals by using the same block of wood for both variants.

A lot of manufacturers use mahogany backs and decorative maple tops.

I didnt mean like a Maple cap mahog back I mean like one side ash other half mahogany or one third mahogany one third maple one third basswood and maybe the top maple but like that.
