I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

Re: I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

While Warmoth claims they only install the frets and any finishing is to be done by the buyer, all the necks I have bought from them have been tits right out of the box. Warmoth makes high quality stuff. The only exception to that is if you have a maple neck, whatever finish you choose will be shot right over the frets as well, so you'll need to clean them up. I ordered an amber tinted neck for the tele and it came with gold frets. Turns out its just the amber and I just needed to polish it off.

Yep. That's funny. I had a the same experience. I ordered a vintage tint satin finish on a maple neck. I received it and immediately contacted customer service to let them know it wasn't supposed to have gold frets. They replied that it was the finish. I felt like a real dumba$$ .... But once polished they've been as good as any fret job I've seen on any production model guitar from any manufacturer. I wouldn't hesitate. Warmoth does very good work.

That always did bug me about their necks. would it really be THAT much trouble to mask 'em off before spraying?

Yes, it would. I'm under the delusion that Fender does it this way as well. The finish gets scraped off during the fret dress stage. Since Warmoth doesn't do that part, they leave it up to you.

There's a former Warmoth employee I know on the ESP forums. From how he described life at Warmoth, I think it would in fact be too much trouble. They are very busy and very fast paced, hence the long wait time to get an order filled. Masking off all the frets of every neck they finish would be a huge impact to their production time, and cost. I think its fine how it is.

Re: I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

I dig it, thats the sh*& right there! TattoedCarrot, whats your take on Warmouth compound radius necks?

i know the question wasn't for me, but i love them. bending is easy in the middle to high neck range, and chords feel great and "right." obviously part of that is the string spacing being good for my hand, but i'm definitely a fan. i have 3 warmoth necks and all are the compound radius. my third warmoth build will have the same neck! with a slightly larger back contour, but same radius.

Re: I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

... I don't buy guitars to hold value and resell, I buy them to enjoy (even if I do flip them a lot).

I agree. I can't believe the number of people who buy guitars and think from the start how much they would sell them.

You can't go wrong with Warmoth, I have three and love 'em all. Definitely not for sale!

Re: I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

You know you wanna do it; so just start the project and start posting pics of your progress. That's what we're all waiting for. Make the exact guitar you want.....

Now you're giving me GAS. And I've found EMGs sound excellent in limba, if that's what that is... I can't quite tell.

Re: I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

Take a screen shot and make a jpeg from it. You can take the screenshot, then paste it into MS paint. Then use the crop feature to crop out the guitar, then file - save as and you're done.

Got it. Thanks. ... goes to show how little I know. I had to do a search on how to take a screenshot. Had I known it was that simple I would have done this a long time ago. :1:

wise choice!!

i've owned more new charvels than i can remember and the music zoo run of naturals are some killer guitars! full on custom shop build at a fair price due to the simple oil finish.

plus you can always have it painted if you tire of the natural look.

I'll never buy it though, even though its a custom shop, a no frills superstrat for almost $2k is a bit steep for me. I think I'd rather just Warmoth one for half the price.

Re: I have GAS to build this (Warmoth)

Besides the great quality of the Warmoth, building something from scratch and designing it yourself is kinda cool. I tend to value it more sentimentally than my modded assembly guitars. Wouldn't think of selling it. Maybe that's just me though.

My first guitar (pawnshop LP) is up there too...
