anyone remember when i said i lent my money to my sis for school? well since then i've been working way harder that normal, and worked for my ENTIRE spring break(well, except some nights... i need to party too..) and it looks like if i get the money i lent my parents back when tehy say i will i'll have enough money for a mesa half stack AND a new guitar! i was thinking either a used les paul classic or a new sg standard... any opinions?

Re: I HAVE MONEY, mwhahaha!!!

they two are quite different, what are you going for?

Re: I HAVE MONEY, mwhahaha!!!

i really want a guitar i can keep in standard tuning, but i like my standard tuning to be a little dark... i plan to put some heavier pickups into it...

it's really wierd because the stuff i play is totally diffrent from one another (i play metal sometimes, but i have some songs that song even have distortion) an di need a guitar that can keep up basically

Re: I HAVE MONEY, mwhahaha!!!

Uhh... to my ears, the SGs are a bit brighter, or more aggresive sounding, or whatever, prolly because of the thinner body. A les paul sounds darker, IMO. Never really messed around with customs much, but i bet with their mahogany cap (versus maple on nearly all other LPs), they'd be even darker still. Although, they have an ebony fretboard, which is brighter sounding than the rosewood on other models...

My best advice is to go play a ton of guitars, of all different makes and models, till you find the right one, the one that grabs you by the cajones. Make sure it feels good physically on your body, make sure it plays like you like, make sure it sounds the way you want, both unplugged and plugged in. Playing unplugged is a very important process, IMO, because it really reveals sonically dead peices of wood, whereas this is sometimes harder to detect when playing through an amp, especially one in a store that you aren't familiar with. And when you find 'the one', don't let it go, if at all possible. If cost more than what you've got, see if you can talk em down at all, or get some money from your parents temporarily, or see if you can put it on layaway long enough to get enough money....

but if you want a great guitar, it'll be worth it. Be picky. See if you can't go to some sort of mom-and-pop stores, they tend to take much better care of their instruments than the big chains.

Good luck!!

:)

Re: I HAVE MONEY, mwhahaha!!!

For playing metal, IMO you need brighter sounds, not darker to get that heavy distortion tone. Most of the guys I know that play metal/hardcore around here prefer the SG over the paul (it's lighter and brighter sounding). I have both, but for my hardcore band I use the SG. With that said, trust your own instincts, and maybe even try guitars that don't say gibson on it.

Finally, have fun in the process. It's not everyday that most of us get to plunk down cash like that on gear. Congratulations! :)
