I have no self control... (Charvel Content)

Re: I have no self control... (Charvel Content)

I was hoping it would be like a soloist when I bought it, so this has me excited! I had always wanted a Jackson soloist with the Kahler like what Jeff Hanneman had before swapping to ESP, but they're pretty rare and go for more than I can justify spending...

That's essentially what you have; but with an unbound rosewood board instead of bound ebony. If you're looking for an aggressive sound for the guitar, try a Full Shred in the bridge. My brother installed a Full Shred in the bridge of my Model 4 before I bought it from him and it sounded great. Unfortunately he kept the pickup when he sold the guitar

Quick update before I go to work: The guitar arrived and it's a bit rougher than I could tell from the pictures the seller posted. It's fixable for sure, but by the nut, the side of the neck has been scraped pretty badly to the point you can feel a bit of the fretboard hanging off a bit. I'm afraid it will have to be refinished after the repairs, which is a shame because I love the color... Also I didn't notice that it had the fixed bridge Kahler with it. I rechecked the listing and he said it wasn't a tremolo, so thats on me. Luckily I searched for a Kahler really quick and found one for $150 and I jumped on it. Can probably recoup some cost by selling the fixed bridge version. Unfortunately the Pickups are not J80cs... Sorry for any grammar errors or typos, but I'm in a rush because of work. I'll post pics when I get home

Despite the damage, I'm still super excited to have this! When she's all fixed up I could see this being my favorite neck profile and it's my only neckthrough guitar, so that neck heel is going to be magical! After thinking long and hard, I've decided on the DiMarzio Norton in the bridge and Paf pro in the neck and since it's going to be repainted after the repairs, the single coil spot will be filled in.

Oh wow...ya that's a little nasty on the neck. Could just re-do the neck and keep the body colour if you wanted...or even strip the neck and leave it natural.

What were the pickups he sent with it? Still looks like a nice little project.

Re: I have no self control... (Charvel Content)

I considered just redoing the neck, but I might as well refinish the whole thing and fill in the extra holes by the bridge and get rid of the spot for the single coil.

The pickups both have stickers that say LP-h with one marked 11.2 and the other marked 11.8, which I'm assuming is the DCR reading. It also has a random Jackson single coil, but it doesn't say anything on it. If you're still interested shoot me a PM with an offer

Re: I have no self control... (Charvel Content)

If you really wanted you could repair that. Might show somewhat but you could get it close.

1. Match the paint
2. Color the exposed wood parts
3. Start filling with superglue and building up the area
4. Spot level the area
5. Buff

I watched a stewmac video on superglue repair and a few others around youtube. I did a few larger chips on one of mine and it turned out awesome. I also have done it on my mates guitar which had a giant chunk missing. You would be surprised at how good you can actually get it.

No harm in trying anyway if you can't get it right then just go back to the refinishing idea. But imo if that was my guitar i wouldn't be painting it.

Restore it!!

You guys are right, if it's possible to bring it back to it's former glory I'll go down that road first and refinishing will just be plan B.
