I intonated my first guitar yesterday.

I intonated my friends new Epi LP. It was in dire need of it even he thought it sounded ok. I was chillin over at his house and the thing was just getting on my nerves. It was not as hard as I thought it was, I was done in 10 minutes. He says he can't believe how much of a difference there was (even though he still sounded like crap).

I am thinking the next guitar I should get should have a tunamatic bridge because it was easy. I look at my floyd on my ibanez and I don't even wanna try.

I think a Fender Vintage Tremelo Bridge is quite easy to set up intonation on.
Never set up a tuneomatic, but I assume thats also easy.

It's no harder to intonate a Floyd, it's just more work due to the fact that you have to tighten the saddle screw, check the intonation, then loosen it and adjust it, and then do the whole thing again. It definitely takes longer than intonating a TOM or Strat-style trem, but it's not any harder. The important thing is to use the most accurate tuner you can get your hands on, and you also want to check the intonation with the guitar in the playing position. You should also consider what kind of player is going to be using the guitar. If he plays with a light touch and you squeeze the string while intonating, it'll sound out of tune when he plays because it's been intonated for a heavy-handed player. Same is true for the opposite scenario. That's why I recommend that everyone learns to set intonation themselves. Most techs won't bother to ask about your playing style, they'll just set intonation based on theirs.

Re: I intonated my first guitar yesterday.

I've heard of the Dan Erlwine 'how to make your electric guitar play great' book, but does anyone else know of a source on the internet that goes over intonation, truss rod adjustment, action adjustment etc. in deatail. Preferably for les pauls. Most of the stuff I came across was too general. I may just have to buy the book though

I've always used my Korg Digital tuner and it seems to work ok is there a tuner that would be much better suited?

Re: I intonated my first guitar yesterday.

The Peterson Virtual Strobe tuners are the best I've found for setting intonation. The VS-1, VS-2, and Strobostomp are all accurate to 1/10 of a cent. By comparison, Boss pedal tuners are only accurate to +- a couple of cents.
