I just can't ever remember this ....

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

8 if you're chaining them from a single input on your head

I have a feeling it's different if each cab has it's own cable to the head, but I can't remember.

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

DR. Mavashi! Man its been like forever. Did you graduate SFU? Are you still lugging Laney half stacks up three flights of stairs? lol

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

Hey Metal Maniac, yeah its been a while, two years ago we've had our daughter, now son is on the way - so, my internet time went down impressively. No more lugging Laney heads and Marshall cabs to third floor, we are in lockout now and if I do bring gear home its goes to my garage, what an amazing difference that is ... Graduated USF in 2007 ... time man ... it just goes by faster than YJM's shred .... We were recording yesterday, thus the question ... MM check it, we ere recording in a studio that is a former meat locker on a former U.S Navy Ship Yard in San Fran ... how metal is that ?!

Agile Guy,
Now I will remember since I've ran it yesterday. Laney AOR has to jacks for cabs, so I set AOR to 8 ohms, and and set my JCM900 1960A 4X12 (G12 75) and studio's 2X12 (V30) to 16 ohms. Its not stereo, my marshal cab threw me off because it has Stereo selector switch to feed to amps to one cab .... really like the 75/30 mix ....

I just can't ever remember this ....

Just remember the speaker outs on the amp are wired in parallel. So for your Marshall, 1 cab at 16 ohms, set the amp to 16. With 2 x 16 ohm cabs, set the amp to 8 ohms.

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

Usual amnesia is here again: so If its two 4X12 16 ohms with their own cables into the amp amp is set to 8 ohms, correct ? Thank you Bros! Playing with different cabs before studio time on the 13th!

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

Yes. Always half of the lowest impedance cab.

Got a label maker? Put it on the back of your head. I'm serious, last thing you need to to have a brain fart at a gig and blow your tranny (jokes)

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

So, I wanna try tracking two cabs simultaneously, my marshal cab and my friend's orange, here is how inputs look, my Laney has 4 ohms, 8 ohm, and 16 ohms, but my favorite sound is 4 ohms. What are my options dudes ? Thanks!

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

You can't run those 2 cabs together, the Orange is 8 ohms mono and the Marshall is 4 or 16 ohms mono. Definitely best if they match.

The jacks on your amp are in parallel so the formula to calculate parallel resistances is Rt = 1/(1/R1 + 1/R2 + ... + 1/Rn), which fortunately works out to be 1/2 of each resistance if you have 2 equal Resistances in parallel. Meaning 2X 16 ohm cabs in parallel is 8 ohms, 2X 8 ohms is 4 ohms. An 8 ohm cab and a 16 ohm cab is 5the .33 ohms, so you could run the amp at 4 ohms, but the 8 ohm cab will get 2/3 of the power while the 16 ohm cab will get 1/3.

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

He could run the Marshal at 16 Ohms and one half of the Orange at 16 Ohms, leaving the other two speakers in the box to be passive radiators.:D
Amp on 8 Ohms

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

Hijack time:

I've got two 8 ohms cabs. One is a 1x12, the other is a 2x12.
If I was to plug them both into my Tweaker (it has two outputs), should I use it at 4 ohms?

I've never ever dealt with this.

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

Presuming the two outputs are set up to connect in parallel, Yes 4 Ohms.

The manual suggests it is a parallel connection.

Hey Deva, nice to see you are still here. So you are saying that I can be safe by running it both cabs on mono, and amp set at 4 ? how would uneven power load impact the sound? thank you again.

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

How would I do that ?
With the amp set at 8 Ohms.
I'm presuming that when you plug into the stereo socket it splits the speakers as it says on the panel. Other stereo boxes have a switch for this. So just plug one output into the stereo socket and leave the other empty. [ Mono ] Plug your other cabinet into the other output on the amp.

The other cabinet should be set to Mono and plugged into the 16 Ohm socket.

Alternatively run/plug into the Orange at 8 Ohms Mono and the Marshal switched to stereo and plug into one side only. Set the amp for a 4 Ohm output.

Aha!!! Thanks! All I have to do is to confirm if it is in fact just two speakers pushing 16 ohhms ...

I've never ever dealt with this.

The power will split evenly between the cabinets, so, the speaker in the 1-12 cab will get 1/2 of the power, the speakers in the 2-12 cab will each get 1/4 of the power.

Re: I just can't ever remember this ....

I just edited my post with an alternate setup at the bottom.
Thank you, this might be the first option to try as for years I've been running this Marshal Cab and Laney head matched at 4 - love the tighter and punchier sound of 4 ohms ...
