She's giving props to Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller in her playing.
Not that she's a slap player, more in her approach to sounding like an upright acoustic player.
Cool.

Yeah . . . I'm just sitting here listening to this music. It's the coolest version of this Jeff Beck song that I've heard.

Stop that. You'll get hair on yo' palms.

EDIT - To save Little Pigsammler from posting, I shall put this question. Why should the facts that a musician is a) female and b) young have the slightest bearing on our assessment of her abilities?

a) shouldn't
b) because she's a better bassist than some dudes twice her age, and who probably have higher name recognition in the public?

The first fact (female) shouldn't. There are many great female musicians out there.

The second fact (age) I believe will be a factor. Many people are blown away by her still at her young age. Personally, I'd like to give her five years and see where she progresses. Much like a band that comes out with an amazing first album but then falls short thereafter and breaks up, solidifying their "one hit wonder" status, many skeptics want to make sure she's not just a flash in the pan that got a break. There are a TON of great musicians on YouTube, so what makes her that special? And I think the next couple of years and her projects will show that.

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

It appears to me that TW is following the jazz legend career trajectory. Precocious talent, formal study, paying dues in the bands of famous leaders (often, by invitation). Next step, own band and compositions.

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Considering she did her first album 8 years ago and played with Jeff Beck in 2009 , she has been around for awhile now. Great player

It doesn't. I hope I didn't go there. But she is easy on the eyes. Great bassist too. :)

Yeah, Esperanza is amazing - and tiny!!! I'm fairly positive I could smuggle her in an upright bass, should the need arise.

I got to sit in on a masterclass of hers at the local university a couple years ago. Very insightful and informative, especially when critiquing the college student groups that were performing in her class. Biggest thing she said there (not verbatim, it's been a while):

"You have to have something to say; chops don't matter. If you have nothing to say on your instrument, I'll just go home and listen to albums with people better than you."

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Who was the female bassist that played with Jeff Beck on one of the Crossroads concerts in the late 2000's? She was pretty good, looked oriental or partly oriental.

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Tal is my future wife. She doesn't know yet, but she is.
