I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Who was the female bassist that played with Jeff Beck on one of the Crossroads concerts in the late 2000's? She was pretty good, looked oriental or partly oriental.

Possibly Rhonda Smith.

About Tal, she came up to SD one day a few years back with her Sadowsky to get some help chasing a weird tone she was hearing. Really nice person. Super sweet and totally dedicated to her instrument. Seymour asked her how long she'd been playing bass and she answered, proudly, "Six years." That impressed me more than anything.

tal did the 2007 crossroads, Rhonda did 2010, tal was back for 2013

I'm not sure if I first heard of Tal when she was gigging with Jeff Beck or not, but she's got some killer licks and grooves. I admire anyone who's that young and plays at such a high level of proficiency. You have to be born with that kind of talent.

And yeah, she is gorgeous, isn't she?

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Lots of the 'born with it' includes her pretty face and full figure.......but her playing seems earned and a passion she continues to develop. When you have Jeff Beck and others wanting you ........you're in a different league. Good for her.

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

I watched a few of her latest videos and she plays tight with the band and works to remain part of the supporting cast. Good presence on stage and smiling is something lots of performers forget - and don't realize the show is lots of times as important as the music.

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

I think she could have done more on her CD.....on the other hand she didn't produce a "bass album"....more of an upbeat album with slight focus on bass now and then.

Anyone know if she is still actually touring with Jeff Beck? I saw him on stage in a clip with another female bass player.....not as young as Tal or as attractive, but could hold her own too!

That's Rhonda Smith, who was working with Prince prior to replacing Tal in Jeff Beck's band. Tal is an Aussie girl, from Sydney. The first we heard of her here was when she toured with Chick Corea in 2007, not long before she got the gig with Jeff Beck. I've seen both incarnations of Beck's bands with these girls, and much preferred Tal combined with Vinnie Colaiuta. She brought a fluidity and musicality well beyond her years and gave Beck a great platform for his Beckness. Shades of Jaco at times. Truly a prodigious talent. She has since worked with Herbie Hancock, Jackson Browne, Lee Ritenour and Steve Lukather. I don't think we need to wait around to see if she amounts to anything.

Cheers................................... wahwah

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

Nice. So is she still affiliated with Jeff Beck or have they gone their separate ways? Did they part on good terms? I'm guessing he may have been disappointed if it was her choice to move on???

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

tal and vinnie were an amazing rhythm section, cant ask for more than that. i assume tal is still on good terms with beck. he changes bands a lot and only tours sporadically, cant expect a great player to sit around and wait

Re: I just "discovered" Tal Wilkenfeld.

EDIT - To save Little Pigsammler from posting, I shall put this question. Why should the facts that a musician is a) female and b) young have the slightest bearing on our assessment of her abilities?

Because her abilities involve both being a musician and being an entertainer. Looks are completely irrelevant to being a musician, but they are relevant to being an entertainer.

I'm quite sure nobody thinks Tal is a great bass player because she is cute. But her looks are an asset when on stage, especially with the added novelty factor of being so young. I'm pretty sure most people would rather watch her than a old bald fat guy, even if (hypothetically speaking) my talents were on par. I mean his. His talents.
