I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

Wow, really don't like those reliced guitars. The white overcoat just looks weird to me.

As far as purple metallic guitars go . . .

. . . I'm good. No need to bang it up on purpose.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

Yup. I don't get it either. I'd even take it a step farther and say that if I ever had SRV's old Strat . . . I'd probably have it refinished. :D

Edit: Beautiful Strat GuitarStv.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

Yeah, Metallic Purple needs to be shown, not hidden.

So this guy takes partscasters, installs a Floyd, and does a crap paintjob and beats the hell out of them, and marks them up by $4k?

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

There are alot of things in life that I do not understand.

E.g. every day there is a " I think this sucks, dont you too?" Thread about relics, or Gibson or Marshall or modelling or whatever.

Not my money. Got no business *****ing about how people spend iwhat they earn but some people feel the need to do so (and often insult people in the process) THAT is something I truly do not get.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

Humbucker in Strat ? Yuk. Floyd ? Yuk. Appearance .... might as well look like crap after the first two abberations ... keeps the theme intact. In my worthless opinion. If you want a humbucker and floyd, buy an Ibanez.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

To each their own. Many of us have no use for locking trems, and even H-S-S Strats, but obviously there is somebody out there that would be pumped for those features, and that paint scheme. If that's what they want, great that these are out there.

The thing that shocks me is the prices! Who the hell thinks "wow, great deal!"? Not me. Give me a Kirn, or a partscaster even. I'll be just as happy, and spend a lot less.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

I just can't fathom that those things are selling. I'm on Wild West's email list and am pretty sure I got an email about those same guitars a few months ago. There is a slim chance that they have restocked, but doubtful.

Nobody was *****ing about how anyone spends what they earn. OP was indicating that he didn't feel the finish on those guitars was up to par for a 5k guitar. If you don't agree, that's fine. I don't see anything wrong with discussing where something seems to have gone wrong on a particular guitar finish though.

To my eyes, relics seem to look best with colours that are dark and closer to the colour of the wood that's wearing through.

These two kinda work for that reason . . .

The white colour scraping away to reveal alternating wood and very vibrant colour doesn't seem to look right to my eyes though.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

This particular style of aging seeks to emulate what happened to old Fenders, which is that they were first painting something "standard" like sunburst and then put a color over that was actually ordered.

I think it looks unnatural if the color below it is something flashy, because flashy was only put on top.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

hmmm thats a bit much even for me. for that sort of money i would by a custom made by Wayne Charvel

I did a relic not so long ago i need to assemble it again. Only difference is its a new completely flat finish that looks old and required over 2months of work to finish.

...and I wait for the day where the Gibson Tom Scholz Les Paul relic is cleaned up and re-issued NOS/brand new like a '68 Les Paul Gold Top (or Natural) should look when first bought! :-)
I buy signature models but only NOS......no relics for me.

Re: I just dont get this relic thing..White Lightening series

I would imagine that the idea is that as you continue to play it, the white wears of, revealing more of the undercoat (purple for example). I don't mind the "vintage accurate" oversprays (solid color over sunburst) but that's probably because I've seen those in over the years.

+1. To me relic'd guitars are ridiculous...fake wear? 'I'm trying to fool people into thinking this is a vintage guitar. Don't I look cool?' How phony. I also agree about SRV's guitar: I can't stand all those Strats with half the finish missing, I don't care who owned them. They're nasty. They look termite-infested and no doubt are a biohazard with the accumulation of decades of sweat, dirt, mucous, slime, & bacteria on them. Probably more germs than a public toilet. If some guys want to stand in awe of them, that's fine, but I wouldn't touch one unless I had gloves on. Some wear on an old guitar is one thing, and to be expected, that's fine; but there's a point at which it becomes an eyesore and a refinishing is in order. At least clean the things.

Relic's are meant to be a credibility builder. Want to look like your an accomplished musician with years of experience? Buy a relic guitar!

I think i found a pic of you, holding Rory's Strat ....

.... as if Strats weren't ugly enough to begin with....
