I just realized something big

I'm no longer a big LP fan like I was for several yrs. I still enjoy playing them, but they just don't do it for me like they did. I cannot put my Carvin dc135 and 727 down. The necks are perfect for my hands. I love the tone of my LP's but my fretting hand cramps up and aches forever when I play them. That makes me so sad b/c LP's are dead secksy. I need to get a neck thru explorer or an SG (normal).

So, has anyone here come to painful realizations about guitars you love? I'm gonna keep my epi LP custom forever, I may just frame it, but I'll never part with it. I've beem GAS'ing for a Carvin cs6 for a long time and I still haven't done it b/c I dunno if I can commit to another single cut again, despite it's lack of neck heal. I'm no shredder by any means, but I've grown used to upper neck access.

I've discovered recently that I love bolt-ons, and Floyds really aren't bad at all.

You know I once had a Russian made Dobra Kravostki that used I used to sit down to play cause it was just so big and heavy.
Trouble was it was crushing my mershtakoz ( balls )
so I finally ended up selling the guitar to a wandering Rumanian gypsy transvestite.
Now at least my electric ukulele doesn't crush my mershtakoz.

I wouldn't say that I've lost my love for certain guitars. I've just found myself wanting other things. For me it use to be a shred type guitar or nothing. Now I find myself wanting an LP, Tele, Semi Hollow, etc...

-If I'm going to have an all mahogany guitar its going to need a real maple cap.

-Clean tone is becoming more and more important to my music.

-I need to pick up a strat sometime soon.

I realised that :

I only do maple necks,
A trem is important for me (vintage, not locking),
I need locking tuners,
Heavy guitars I do not do anymore.

I owned a Gibson ES-333 for a couple years, but I found I just wasn't playing her nearly enough. I don't think I mesh with semi-hollows very well, but I'm not sure.

Because of the band I'm in, I play my LP more than any other guitar, but I think a Tele is a more natural fit for me.

When I was 18 I only had a Strat, so I assumed that the natural thing to do would be to get a Les Paul to complement it. I wound up with an Epi LP standard. It really didn't suit me at all, and I eventually realized that I only owned it because I thought I should. To this day it remains the only guitar I've ever sold. I liked the idea of owning an LP more than I actually liked playing it. It didn't help that it wasn't a very good guitar, but to this day every time I pick up an LP - even a Gibson historic - I still have the same "meh" reaction.

The one exception to this is my Warmoth LP, but that's probably because it's 25.5" scale length and has the Strat control layout. Even so, it's probably my least played guitar. There's nothing wrong with it at all, in fact it's great. I simply prefer Fenders.

I really do love Strats, and have since day one. I like other guitars too, especially Teles, but Strats will always be my go-to guitar.

Indeed! My Ibanez has surprisingly great clean tone (thank you Ap2) and huge distorted tone. But I really miss the neck position of a strat. I would use the strat for recording and funkier/clean dominated songs live.

I realized that a great electronics layout for a strat is a humbucker and a hot single coil in an HS with nothing but 1 250K volume and a Gibson style 3 way. No tone control, just the volume with no capacitor on it, so I can darken it to taste. Maybe I'm imagining stuff, but I swear it rings better without the middle pickup's magnetic pull.

My next step is to add a switching volume pot, so I can split or tap either of the pickups.
The new Forum 08 neck single coil is looking really tempting for this guitar too...but it's kinda expensive.

I understand where you're coming from, but for me, its usually like honey moon phase. I'll sometimes get new guitars and they're absolutely great. I'll play it for a while but eventually come back to an LP. I learned to play on an LP, so they just feel "right" to me. I couldn't imagine not having an LP in my collection.

I hear ya on the honey moon phase, but I've had my dc135 for about 5 yrs now and I like it more and more everyday. I'm still trying to get used to the dc727, but that's cuz it's a 7 and has a FR, both of which I've never spent much time with.

It really sucks tho cuz my LP's are my best sounding guitars, but the necks give me fits. They cause me pain to play for any length of time, unlike my thinner necked guitars. Maybe I just need to find another LP with a thinner neck, or an SG or something.

Well, in my case I'm just finding that I was ALMOST right from the beginning and I'm now mostly refining things than having stark realizations.

I love Strats and have done so from day one.
I also loved superstrats and in my early days had thought that those and their paper-thin necks would be the epitome of all I'd ever want from a guitar.

Since then I've discovered that although I do like thin necks a lot there's a point where it becomes TOO thin while, the thinner the neck, the thinner the tone.
Since that time my technique has also improved to the point where I'll have mostly no problems playing Strat-thick necks so the gain in tone is a welcomed addition

my most surprising/weird realizations...

-i'm not that big on rosewood fretboards. i like ebony better and maple best.
-i like floyd roses. especially flatmount ones. while its more hassle for changing tunings than hardtail, ive been finding that i feel kinda limited on my non-floyd guitars lately.
-switching from green tortex's to jazz IIIs. i'd been using green tortex's almost since i started playing, and just recently made the change.

Yeah, my favorite clean sound is a strat neck pickup, hands down. I got my les paul after my strat, and I wouldn't have it any other way - while a humbucker in the neck can get great clean tones, they just don't have that character I like so much about singles - some people call it sparkle, chime, all I know is I dig it.

I realized that my short scale Jaguar just plays smoother than anything else... it's ridiculous... could also be affected by the neck profile, but not only my Jaguar HH but also my friend's "normal" Jag just play so smooth you think you're flyin over the fretboard.

I have realized that while LPs are pure secks when it comes to looks and style, their tone does nothing for me. Apologists and fans say dark and fat tone, I say muddy.

I like the springy, bity tone of Strats, Teles, and other lighter, thnner bodies. I don't really care for the LP tones of nobody. Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Slash... I just don't like them that much. So I won't be buying an LP anytime soon.

I realized how awful normal picks are after I got used to Jazz 3's. Playing with anything else feels like paddling down a river with a car door.

My biggest realization was when I sold my SS combo and bought a Dual Rectifier half stack.

Everything else pales in comparison to that.
