I Just Realized.....

I haven't plugged into anything made by the Digitech/DOD company since 1991, and I don't feel I've missed out on anything but hiss and bumblebee tone. :laugh2:

Heh, agree with you. I did plug into a Zoom MultiFX thing once just to realize how crap they truly were... it didn't let me down! :laugh2:

I'd love to try a Fender amp, a nice Stratocaster, a nice Hollowbody, or to know what's the fuzz about Mesa-Boogie amps... they probably WON'T be my cup of tea since my tone preferences goes towards Marshall zone, but still. At least to say they are buzzy and thin from my own experience! :chairfall :fingersx:

Re: I Just Realized.....

I've NEVER plugged into or played a Marshall of any year, vintage, style etc....
There's still a little voice saying try one.

Re: I Just Realized.....

Try an old Fender tube amp (black or silver face) and I'll bet you'll be impressed...to say the least!!

I recently bought a '67 blackface super reverb...it is like a wall of tone. It will eat a strat if you get too close.

I also have a little '76 princeton reverb...somebody put a 12" in it and the bottom is great.

Never played a Fender...I think you have something to look forward to....but please try some of there older models before you draw any conclusions.

ENJOY

Dave

Re: I Just Realized.....

Hmmm. I've owned and played Gazillion Fender amps from a 63' Blonde Bassman to my HRD. But I just realized... I never played a real Tweed Fender?
Or the following:
A real NMV Marshall:smack:
Vox Or any other British amps (Besides my Laney or Marshall)
Solodano or any other Boutique $tyle amp.
But I have played some cool vintage amps.:D
Ampeg V4 and Gemini
Magnatone 440
Kustom 150
Silvertone
Mesa Treadplate's ,XXX's and TSL's make me crazy:yell: All cool amps, But to many knobs and switches and bells and whisle's.
Give me 6 knobs or under, No FX loop,No Channel switching...And I'm good to go.:laugh2:

Re: I Just Realized.....

Seafoamer.......NOBODY here has ever actually played a Dumble......who can play an amp that costs as much as the average Honda Accord:laugh2: Puckboy....as for Fenders, you have played one ....sort of.....the Bluesbreaker Combo is a modified Tweed Bassman circuit. Only now do you understand the power of the Dark Side:fingersx:

Re: I Just Realized.....

I've played a Two Rock which is damn close to the Dumble tones I hear on some artist recordings.

My opinion is that the Deluxe Reverb is the ultimate Fender amp. Not too loud, not too soft, distorts nicely and uses 6V6 tubes which I think are the Perfect Power Tube for a fender reverb amp. Just not a lot of headroom, but a simple 1x12 that is not too heavy.
Great amp.

Re: I Just Realized.....

Just a brief fix, then I'm back to the sabbatical. I miss talking about amps.

Re: I Just Realized.....

+1 Scott.....the Fender Custom Shop trolls need to get off their collective asses and build a handwired balckface Deluxe and Twin. People would buy them sure as the sun will come up tomorrow:fingersx:

I was wonderring if anyone else has never played a staple piece of gear, for whatever reason.....and what might it be?

Gad... so many

I've cronged through a couple of small combos, but I've never spent any quality time at all with a Marshall head/cab combo of any kind. Never touched a Vox at all - heard models on my Pod and heard others playing, and it's definitely not a sound I can see myself using.

There's plenty of stuff I ain't touched. I think part of it has to do with what I told B-Bent in reply to his I Hate Amps thread - it's fun to tweak your knobs/pedals and search for "the sound," but the most important thing is always that you get out and rock. In my mind, while I can pick up on all kinds of nuances, there's still basically two kinds of sound: clean and dirty, and every song calls for one or the other. The rest is just gravy, particularly in a live situation - nobody in the audience cares about your rig in the slightest, and they can't hear your third order harmonics and appreciate that you managed to coax them out through a long series of tests and tweaks with an alchemical combination of tonewood, pups, pedals and tubes... they just wanna know if you're rockin' out.

This doesn't apply, of course, to the gearhead guitar players, who are there specifically to drool at your cool rig. I am often one of these - for instance, this local chick band, one of the guitar players plays through not one, but two Garnet BTOs. I am hopelessly in love with her, and simultaneously venomously jealous, it's horrible...

Whatever the case, another thing that keeps me from plugging into a given amp that I haven't tried is that I spend too much time reading forums and newsgroups, and so before I ever set foot in the music store, I've had it explained to me why those reissue Bassmans or AC30s sound horrible compared to the originals, and they're useless until they've had the Jim Tweeky mods done, or whatever... I'm afraid of trying it out and being prejudiced, so I generally don't. Plus I can't afford any new tube amps, I just keep looking for the deals in the pawnshops.

The one exception to this was when I plugged into a Dual Recto one day when I had a half hour to kill. I fell in love all over again... sigh. If I had that amp, I'd never need another one, really - it does the full range of sound that I need, at the click of a footswitch.

I never plugged into a dimed Marshall Plexi Fullstack :(

You my friend, have not lived then...:laugh2: It's a helluva experience!

On a serious note, I'm just teezin about the Vox stuff...the tones aren't for me, but no doubt it's great guitar sound! :bigthumb:

Absolutely!! We could hit 10 GOOD stores within a 50 mile radius around here where me and Christian live!! This just proves that you need to get your butt up here for a visit!! Christian and I can school you in Fenders!! I have finally realized that there is no other amp for me than an old Fender!!
