I might become an LP kinda guy.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

If that 'thing' is making you think about Les Pauls, why don't you play a real genuine unmodified Gibson Les Paul Standard - the difference will be night and day and that'll blow your mind. I wouldnt even touch whatever it is that you are talking about.

By making this statement, you'd seem to imply that any Gibson LP Standard would invariably be better than any Epi LP, and you would, as usual, be wrong.

Sure, there are Gibsons that would be better, but that very Epiphone is better than a certain percentage of Gibsons, and that's just fact.

Man, you really need to get out in the real world and take guitars up onstage more.

Don't take the bait! Last thing we need is for this to turn into an argument about epi vs. gibson. Each side will have their opinion, that's just the way of the world. Let MM do his thing man, his posts like anybody else's are going to be opinion whether or not they say so.

Moving on, a professional setup makes all the difference in the world, IMO. After I had my highway 1 strat get a fret level, crown, polish and setup by a good luthier (this was forever ago, like nearly 10 years ago oh my god I'm getting old) it played better to me than any american strat I've put my hands on since, and if I'm being honest it was in my best estimation about 85% of the way to playing like an anderson, which considering that it was not an anderson is pretty incredible. As I've since learned, there's no substitute for good wood (The 1" maple/kingwood neck + 2-piece lightweight swamp ash body on my telecaster is much louder and more resonant despite having a 4-screw ashtray tele bridge vs. the 6-point tremolo) but a good setup will get you so close nobody who listens to you play will notice.

I have a LP which I get out occasionally but I can never gel with it as well as I do with my telecaster, despite being more than 2x the price. There's technically nothing wrong with it (quite the contrary actually, it plays like butter and sounds like thunder) but the 24.5" scale is just cramped feeling to me. IDK what the string spacing is on my tele neck but it's wider than any of my other guitars and I kind of prefer it that way now.

I'm glad you like the LP though - like I said earlier a good setup is often times all a guitar really needs to go from being good to a favorite.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Don't do it. Too many have succumbed to the external charms of the Les Paul; only to wind up in misery because of its outdated practicalities.

Some have even claimed to grow tired of the really, really, really heavy albatross around their necks.

:naughty:

Actually, I would get another one for its tone not for any "external charms" I typically prefer Strats because I like the feel of the neck and prefer the Fender scale. That being said, I miss the tone I had with my Gibson LP Studio with ceramic pickups...was just an awesome sounding guitar. The first time I played that LP, the drummer came up to me and said "that guitar has the best tone of any you've played." So even the drummer verified what my ears heard as an improvement in tone by switching from an Ibanez to the Gibson.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Love it, that's a great way to get a cool guitar.

I love the Lesters

I think you hit the nail on the head. More so than me showing off my "new" Les Paul. I'm showing off what my luthier friend can do with a ship wreck.

I'd sail this baby around the world. ;)

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Thats a wonderful Epi! I dont even know what I was thinking. I actually have an Epi Les Paul that I totally adore!! D'oh! I think they probably need new pickups is all.:smack:

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

The Gibson Les Paul Custom is the best electric guitar. Glad to see you're liking yours.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Great story and a very nice looking guitar.

I keep trying to become a Tele kinda guy, and much as I love my Tele the Les Pauls just keep dragging me back! I love 'em.

Most times I can ignore Jer's bs, but sometimes he lays it on a bit thick. :smash:

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

How in the hell does someone break a guitar neck in seven places? That had to be intentional. I've seen a guitar get run over by a car, and it didn't even do that to it. Anyways, congratulations and enjoy the new guitar.

That's my question.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Just a brief history of this guitar: (Epiphone Les Paul Custom)

A customer brought it to my luthier friend. Neck was broken in seven places. Guitar was beat. My friend advised him that the repair would exceed what the guitar cost new. Customer said do it. He was wary of the guy being able to pay for that extensive of repair. He was right. Customer never showed up to pick it up.

Several years later, he asks me if I'd like it. (He did the basic neck repair, but nothing else.) I say "yes". That was a couple years ago.

A couple weeks ago, he asks me what I've done to the guitar. I say "nothing", except install some Duncan pups. We trade favors all the time. He takes it back, and does all the final work, and a setup . . . for free.

I can't believe how sweet this thing plays and sounds. It may have instantly become my favorite axe. And I'm not an LP kinda guy.
The pups are Blues Saraceno PATB-3b and PATB-1n. Killer clean sound. (Sorry about my photographic skills.)

Oh, and he installed a bone nut.

Did a trade deal with Art today and he brought this LP along. The repair work was top notch and the neck felt amazing with awesome action. Kudos to ArtieToo for a great LP!

Art can tell the full story, but apparently some dude tried to spin the guitar around his body only to wind up with the strap coming off and the guitar taking a tumble... :smack:

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

That's a sexy guitar that I'm sure plays and sounds wonderful, but I have a dumb, shallow question...
Am I the only one that can't stand the way the Parallel axis pickups look?

I'm seriously repelled by their looks and, like Lace Sensors, wouldn't consider using them just for that reason.

Shallow and stupid of my part, but what can I do? I just don't like them.

EDIT: Sorry everyone, I tried not to make that sounds too negative, but it sort of does anyway.
Not the intention by any stretch, there's few things in life I love to celebrate as much as somebody seriously loving a new guitar and Artie's got just that.

I'm not a fan of how the parallel axis pickups look at all. What can I say? I prefer a classic, traditional look.

That being said, all that really matters in the end is how they sound and if the player likes them.

Re: I might become an LP kinda guy.

Absolutely man. Artie loves it and that's what matters here.
I was just wondering if anyone else here pays attention to that detail, or if I'm just weird.
Congrats Artie man, that's a sweet axe.

That's pretty much it. :)

Thanks man. I actually like the Axis looks. But just on one axe.

And it was fun meeting up with Trey. He's good people.
