I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

I've decided to get a few pedals for my amp, to give myself a bit of inspiration, and a few more tones to play with. My amp is a Marshall 5010, one of the best amps I've ever played, and it's very transparent and detailed sounding.

I want a good wah, a delay, and a univibe. The pedals got to be true bypass, possible to find used, and not in the boutique price range.

It's very important that they don't have that digital coloring that Ibanez, Boss and those pedals have. I tried a few boss pedals with my amp, but it sounded completely useless. I also tried a Vox wah, which sounded good, a little sharp, but had a horrible tone and output suck when bypassed.

So, pedals with true bypass, no digital coloring (a bit of analog warmth is good), something that will compliment my 80's amp and 70's speaker for that Robin Trower tone.

Any advice is appreciated,
-Erlend

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

Have you tried any pedals in the effects loop as opposed to the front end? I've found that some pedals work better in the loop. Distortion/overdrive going to the amp's input with wah, flange/chorus going into effects loop seemed to be a good mix. I was disappointed with the shrieky sounds the wah would get going into the front end, but it mellowed out nicely in the effects loop.

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

Sure... I've been playing guitar for almost ten years, and I know how to make use of the effects loop. :)

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

It's my favorite pedal setup as well, only I lean more towards a phaser then a univibe - but it's all good.

I use a Vox wah - it's not boutique and I guess it's not true bypass but I don't hear the difference...
Ibanez echo/delay - really not expensive but it will surprise you. It's warmer then a lot of other pedals and the only good thing that I found in their Tone Lok series.

As for a Univibe - I disliked both Fulltone models and the Microvibe by Voodoo Labs.. the Fulltones are more about the chorus then the phasing quality of the vibe and all of them are pretty week sounding, too much money for too little. The Sweetwater Mojo-Vibe is a popular choice but I've never tried it. Ask Rid - there's a company he always recommends (I don't remember their name). Anyway - I've decided that a phaser would be better for my needs but I'm still searching.

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

MojoVibe ( I just happen to have one for sale in fact) or MegaVibe, Teese Wah and Retro Sonic Analog Delay. You'll be a happy man

With things like the vibe pedals theres just no cheap options I'm afraid. Dunlop Univibe is horrible, voodoo lab micro vibe is pretty weak. If you want the true classic vibe tones you've got to got to guys like Bob Sweet, Kevin Randall etc that really know what they are doing.

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

I actually don't mind the Dunlop UniVibe (and like it a lot better than the Fulltone!) but ANY real Vibe is going to be a bit pricey. If you are looking for premium tone at reasonable prices for wahs, a drop in board from Area 51 or BYOC is a good option. Any of the Teese pedals are arguably best of breed.

What are you looking for in a delay? I actually like the L6 Echo Park for a good all around delay, long times, modulation, analog and tape sim, tap tempo... The EHX DMM, Maxon Analog Delays, Boss DMs and Retrosonic are all fantastic analog delays depending on your needs. Boss DDs are the definition of pristine digital delay to me. And we've still only scratched the surface of delays. We have many fans of the Short Timer, Ibanez DE7, Boss DD-20 and L6 DL4 here as well...

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

for Delay : Boss DD-20 and L6 DL4

Univibe : Fulltone, Dunlop

Wah: Talk to Stratdeluxer about modding a Vox or look at BYOC

my humble and still ignorant .02 cents

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

You can pickup a Vox Clyde McCoy Wah which is true bypass and sounds great right out of the box. The other option is to get a Xox 847 and mod it with a true bybass switch. I have a Vox 847 and it has been modded..... sounds great and does not suck any tone. IF money is not an object for a Wah...... get a Tesse Wah. They are probably the best out there.

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

Thanks for all the replies!

The Electro Harmonix Memory Man is a bit out of my price range, costing $800 new here in Norway. I don't really need all those functions either, just a simple delay\echo pedal that doesn't ruin my tone with cold, digital coloring. I've had a few boss and Ibanez pedals, but they all seemed to suck the tone right out of my gear. I've listened to the Maxon AD-999 on various clips, and I like what i hear. Too bad it's so expensive.

As for wahs, i can't find a Teese dealer here in Norway. Buying one unseen is a bit of a risk too. I've tried my friends Vox, but as said, I didn't like it. Alot of tone coloration, and the sweep went way too far into the treble area for my taste.

I don't know alot about vibes, but I've always loved Robin Trowers fat, swimming and psychedelic tone.

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

just get a cheap chorus and plug in a wah. Modulate the frick out of it. This Univibe tone is so close to a good maxed chorus tone i dont even sweat it.
I bought a Vodoo labs Vibe and it was such a one trick pony. Trower Bridge of Sighs and A liitle hendrix. Then I used a good chorus and got 90% of the way there.

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

I think you used every catch phrase when describing pedals...

FWIW, I have never seen a digital wah pedal or a digital Univibe clone so don't warry about them "digital coloring" to your "very transparent and detailed sounding" Marshall amp.

Also, "that Robin Trower tone' doesn't come from your "80's amp and 70's speaker" it comes from/came from Robins Plexi and JMP Marshalls with an original Univibe and a NON TRUE BYPASS WAH PEDAL as well as a Fuzz Face and more than liklely studio echo.,

On another note...don't be so very specific about the types of pedals you want, the types of tones you need to get from them and then put a budget restraint on them...either you want "the best" or you want whatever will give you "the tone" or you want whatever is close and affordable...

Now with all that said...if I were you and had to have a true bypass wah on a budget I'd get a Vox 848...NOT the 847, the 848 is true bypass stock, another option is the Buddah wah...on teh Univibe front there are lots of choices out there, none of them really cheep but the best bang for the buck Univibe IMO is the VooDoo Labs Micro Vibe and on the low buck, true bypass, analog delay the new MXR Carbon Copy looks like a KILLER pedal...I have an Echoplex and I think Im gonna get one!

Sorry but I really got to disagree with this. I've got about 7 chorus pedals and none of them sound anything like a vibe.

Closest thing to a vibe that isn't a vibe is a phaser, and some 4 pole phasers mixed with a tremolo pedal can get you in the ballpark of a nice throbby vibe tone but its still not really the same thing.

If you really want a real authentic vibe sound the options are the KR Musical Mega Vibe or the SweetSound MojoVibe. Dave Fox's new Aqua Vibe probably should nail it as well. Fulltones pedal I honestly wouldn't add to this list as it just didn't have the vintage vibe to its vibe (pun ?)

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

actually recently trower has been using 2 jcm900's with 2x12's, loaded with classic lead 80's

and in my opinion it's prolly the best 'trower' tone he's ever had

Ooh, it came out? The CC2 Vibe is awesome, I wonder if it's the same thing or a new adaptation of the Vibe formula?

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

I would strongly suggest that you look at the new like of BBE pedals. You won't find them used, but they sound good and are very reasonably priced--and true bypass.

I alos like the VOX Clyde McCoy, and my fave delay pedal at the moment is the Rocktron Short-Timer.

Good luck!

Re: I need a delay, wah and a univibe!

Ibanez WD-7 Weeping Demon Wah. Almost infinitely tweakable, and AFFORDABLE.

Great bang/buck ratio.

maybe its cause ive got the Voodo Labs Analog Chorus. Its a Boss CE-1 clone. I think it sound spretty Uni-Vibey at the maxed out setting.i tried them both together (micro-vibe and anlog chorus) and they wrere so close i naver bothered with keeping a Micro-vibe.
