Wow, in the US they are associated with the stoner/doom movement (Sabbath inspired) and the modern metal bands that have picked up on that lineage. You'd never see a power pop type band playing them, they'd have Matchless and Badcats.

Sabbeth only used Orange amps because they had no money as soon as they had cash they got Hiwatts and Ampegs then on to Laney's that part of the problem. The Original Orange amps were cheap as chips and were normally only used until you could afford something better. They were cheaper than a build your own kit in the 60's!

Iommi only used Orange amps for some live German TV appearances because that is what the studio had as their backline.

Oddly I suspect Oasis also used orange (and WEM for that matter) due to the fact that the second hand prices in the eighties and early nineties were really low.

Then everything went retro cool.

That's funny how cultures differ even in regards to amps! I owned a rockerverb combo and loved it, didn't play oasis or stoner/doom rock either...I later traded it for a matchless clubman, yet I don't play Power POP either. In the end I'll probably go back to playing a boogie (my first real tube amp) someday cause I love their preamps so much!

Nope Oasis used them because their manager got them an endorsement deal at the right time nothing to do with music just money.

Mesa Stiletto because it will cover all that you mentioned and have enough gain for the modern stuff.

If you are a rich kid: Bogner Ecstasy, because it contains the whole history of marshall in one amp, the best EL34 type amp out there!

To add from the ones mentioned above, a Laney GH50L.

Or a used Laney VC50/VH100R. The first channel would take care of cleans and 60s-70s OD while the second channel is practically a GH50L which should be able to handle hair metal.

I can vouch for the VC50. Awesome amp, although it is very loud.

Take a look at the brand new Marshall JMD:1 50W & 100W. It's basically a 12AX7 driven modeling amp with an EL-34 power section. I'll admit I haven't seen nor tried one yet, but on paper it looks pretty promising. All the Marshall tones, all the FX, and tubes.

These are the types of amps that will get you good tone at low volumes, and also able to be used live with a band. I'm interested in checking them out, as soon as I see one.

Framus make great amps, the Cobra has a more "British" sound than the Ruby Riot which is more "Californian" the only trouble with Framus amps are that they only make them to order at the moment and you can't get them in the UK for some reason.

I'm currently in a very similar sounding position myself and I've pretty much decided on a Splawn QR as it's 6 footswitchable tones (when used with a switcher) should cover everything I need and would allow me to ditch most of my pedalboard.

If you're talking about the DSL50 head, I wasn't aware they even made a combo of that?

I know they do the DSL401 combo but I used that alot during my college years and it sounded nothing like the DSL50 head they also had.

Weird- I like the tone of orange amps, and I've never heard Oasis before. Only reason I know about them is because I've seen a few younger members post about them here.

To me an Orange amp has a raunchy nasty 70s vibe to it which I dig. Who gives a $hit who else plays them? I'm sure I can find for every amp out there somebody who plays them and sounds like crap.

As for the OP- there are a TON of great sounding amps out there that will fit your bill. You need to try some-kinda figure where you need to go, and then a try a few that are closer in the ballpark to the general tone you are looking at. I for example don't like Splawn- too tight and clinical for my tastes, but other people swear by them. Other people hate the Marshall Vintage Modern, I've been able to get some really nice "classic" marshall tones out of them.
