If you're talking about the DSL50 head, I wasn't aware they even made a combo of that?

I know they do the DSL401 combo but I used that alot during my college years and it sounded nothing like the DSL50 head they also had.

ya the 401 was the one i was talking about. how does it compair to the head versions of the DSL?

When the time comes, I might look into a used DSL. Im just trying to figure out if the 401combo is any good? or if i should go with a used DSL head and just buy a 2x12 cab.

Or maybe try to look into a used JCM800 2x12 combo

CC, I hope you are not talking about getting rid of that AOR head! Try this first, take your V6, and V7 power tubes and pull them out, then try the amp out. This will drop the amp down to 50 watts. Really these AOR heads are not true 100 watts, I can stand in front of mine and play it with the gain on 7 and the master vol on 8 and not even cringe, my Marshall DSL 100 I could not even turn it up past 10 o'clock w/o cringing.

no im gonna keep my AOR. I just want an amp a can get more gain out of without playing at stadium levels

I tried to like that amp but without EL-34's, a Marshall just isn't voiced to my liking. It's gain tone wasn't to my liking. I have a feeling it does best with a strat for a midgain tone. It's highgain tone was very grating on my ears after a few minutes.

You'd probably like a DSL. I only mentioned the new JMD:1 because it's Marshall's most versatile amp yet. I won't give it a stamp of approval till I actually try one.

It's new and it's not cheap, but it's basically Marshall's answer to the Bogner Spider Valve. Do what I suggested, go on Marshall's site, hit Theatre and Product Performance to hear what it's capable of. Sounds good in the clip, but I'll reserve my real opinion till I plug into one.

ya i watched the demo of the jmd on marshall's site. and it sounds better than their solid state stuff, but im not sure what it was, but something about the amp just sounded......digital. I know that's what it is supposed to be, but it just sounded....blah. Lots of versatile sounds out of it though.

What did you not like about the VM?

Yeah, I know a little about the problems. I'm just glad I got one when I did. Over here, they pop up on the used market, from time to time.

What's your budget? You're getting suggestions for amps that range from $700 to $3000+...

For the low end, I would second the suggestion of the Blackstar HT series, I have an HT-40 and really like it. Don't need anything else right now.

For high end, well, it gets alot more personal, if money isn't an object, go play a ton of amps and take home the one that speaks to you. If I had the $, I would probably be lining up a Bogner, a Cornford, a SLO, and a Stiletto (the low end of this bunch) and see which amp I got along with best.

I don't get the Orange hate in this thread. I love my Rockerverb 100. Seems to me that the people badmouthing them are either markedly uninformed or unnecessarily biased for one reason or another, but I digress..


The OP wants a Budda Superdrive 40 or 80.

Agreed, I had the pleasure of rocking one of their custom shop OD50 amps the other day. Lordy lordy what a thunderous sound.

I had an Orange AD30 head for a number of years and really liked it for the most part. It only had 1 of 2 sounds, but for those types of sounds, it was a great amp. I recently sold it as it didn't really fit me anymore.

As regards the DSL401 combo - I absolutely hated it to be honest! It always seemed to have really fizzy sounding OD channels that no amount of EQing could cure.

If I had the choice, I always went for ther DSL50 head and cab.

I even contemplated selling my JCM800 2210 head to buy 1, but I never got around to it :D

Since you already like the Laney gain voicing, why not look for a used GH50L? I recently bought mine for $400.
They are stupid loud, like the AOR, but sound great at lower volume too.

The 401 combo had a different power section than the 50 head (EL84, IIRC).

Yep, but while I've owned and liked other EL84 amps, something about them in that amp just didn't work for me.

It's a 2501 Marshall Dual Master. No clean no verb but great mid heavy classic Marshall crunch in a small package. She get's great tones at low volumes also.
If you want something smoother bigger and more versatile try this.

I used to live about 30 minutes from Scott's shop in NC. It is a little, off the beaten path path place of tonal glory and enormous gas pockets. Scott is an. amp genius. He worked on my old JCM 800 a couple of times....just some minor repair, but I also had him re-wire my Marshall 4x12 and that alone made a world of difference in its tone.

If you want a purpose built amp, Scott is a great great choice. If you want to get an older 2 channel JCM 800, you can have it modded by Jeff Seal, I can did up his contact information. I had a JCM 800 2205 combo that he completely rewired and modded. It had Fender Twin cleans and gain from SRV blues to more over the top gain than I could ever literally use.....and everything else in between that you mentioned. It was the most amazing amp that I have played or owned.

I regret horribly selling it. Just my .02

I have an 50W AOR. If you like the voicing of the AOR100, probably it may be worth checking a 50W JCM800 or JCM900 SL-X. I have all 3 of them. Different favours of the same type of cake, with more fat on JCM800 and more hairs on JCM900. Not if a hairy cake was tasty :)
