I need a new acoustic.

Suggest me some good acoustics I should check out. My range is $700 tops with tax. I played a Chinese Guild yesterday for $600 that I thought sounded pretty good, but I don't want to run out and buy the first guitar I play. I have a bad tendency to be an impulse buyer. So what should I try out?

Re: I need a new acoustic.

I had a Blueridge (BR143), small '000' size body, all solid woods, and that was a very good instrument. I replaced it recently with a Guild GAD30, which is a similar guitar except the nut width/ string spacing is a little wider, which suits me better. Both these instruments are exceptional instruments, end certainly stunning value for money.

I think it helps narrow things down a lot if you know exactly what you want to do with an acoustic, i.e. will it be mostly for strumming, or fingerpicking? Solo playing or in group settings? Is the available volume important, or is good tone more important, regardless of volume? (I've noticed a lot of fingerpickers like myself seem to play smaller-bodied instruments and often need the slightly wider nut width string spacing, dreadnoughts seem to work and sound better for strumming styles and bluegrass flatpicking....but of course anything can be used for anything, it's a matter of personal taste).

I think it's Beandip who will probably recommend the Seagull brand, and i have played another Chinese brand called 'Trinity College' which were very very good (comissioned by Saga Music so i have been told, same as Blueridge). The TC guitars were my second choice after the Guild GAD's. I tried a few of the low-price Taylors and Martins, and was completely unimpressed, i found them to be a waste of time and certainly wouldn't waste my money on them.

Don't pass on the Guilds simply because it was the first brand you checked out, but maybe seek out a few more to play. They will certainly improve with age, and to my ear, they definitely have the 'Guild sound', which is subtle but classy and warm. I know some people can't get their heads around the idea of a Chinese-made instrument being any good (believe me, for decades i was one of those people, i never would have believed i would have owned and loved an instrument made there, let alone two....). But the facts are, they currently make some incredible instruments that equal stuff that costs several times more in 'western' countries.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

Good suggestions so far. Acoustic or e/acoustic?

Taylors are amazingly consistent instruments. If you find a model you really like, you might be able to find a used one in your range.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

I would like a straight acoustic. The Guild I was looking at is the gad-25, it is all mahogany which threw me for a loop. I have no experience with an all mahogany guitar. It sounded pretty good, but I was really looking for a spruce top with mahogany or rosewood sides and back and perhaps an ebony fingerboard. If I can't find anything that fits my criteria I'll most likely grab that Guild.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

The only acoustics that I play are Ovation. They sometimes have a rather two dimensional characteristic to their sound, but I've always gotten along with them very well. There are plenty of models that come in well under your budget.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

I'm not sure if you've found yourself a new acoustic yet, but in that price range you can find several of the Martin 1 series, X series, and the like.

You generally want to shoot for a solid top, what the top material is made of is up to you. Be it Sitka, Adi, Englemen, Cedar, Red whatever. So I'm just going to shoot out several brands, and you can try 'em. Just find the one that sounds the best. If it's not that much of a player, that's fine. You can have a setup done. But if it plays great and sounds meh, you're SOL.

Silver Creek
Seagull
Taylor
Martin
Epiphone Masterbilt
Epiphone
Cort
Alvarez
Tyler Mountain
Takamine
Yamaha
Ibanez (AW series)

You always get more for your money when buying used. I've actually never bought a new guitar. They've always been used some way or another (I have one demo that was "new"). The discounts given allow you to possibly get solid back and sides, or leave enough left over for a great setup.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

Takamine
Guild GAD series
Seagull
Alvarez
Epi masterbuilt (some real gems in here)

I personally hate the way every single ibanez acoustic guitar ive played has sounded so id stay away from them.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

I wound up buying a Yamaha. Went to Guitar Center and played a lot of different guitar. I kept coming back to the same one and since it was in my range I picked it up. It is the first Yamaha I have ever owned and I'm really impressed.

Yeah, the 3 best acoustic guitar makers I have come across are Martin, Yamaha, and Washburn. My current acoustic guitar is a $400 Washburn, I went in with $700 and thought this one was better than the rest. Other than one guitar but it was $1,200... The Washburn responds to dynamics in your picking so well it is unbelievable.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

Yamaha makes great acoustics. I have a Sigma D-18 Anniversary I bought used ten years ago and it still sounds great. My buddy bought a 1963 Martin D-28 in the 1970's and it is still one of the best D-28s I have ever played. The Seagulls are really well made and very warm. Low end Martins, Taylors and Gibsons stink. I have played some nice Epiphones and some really nice Corts and Yamaha. Although, I prefer Ibanez's electrics, I bought a really cool classical that tunes to pitch. I agree that the Blueridges are really well made, but they aren't cheap anymore. Haven't had a chance to play a low end Washburn, but the high end ones are great.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

I've been eyeing some carvin acoustics... Surprised no one has mentioned them. Great reviews, solid woods, all for $300-$750, plus carvin has a reputation for making great guitars...

Re: I need a new acoustic.

hey beandip...

whats the word on those silver creek guitars? They look like some really nice prices for an all solid wood guitar.

So far, the jury's still out. I spend a lot of time on the AGF and UMGF, and so far there's been mixed reviews. Some love 'em, some don't.

There's been far much more positive response on the Recording King models. I'm anxious to try out a few myself. It's said that they're built somewhat heavily, but nothing like the Martin duds of the 70's.

Re: I need a new acoustic.

Another vote for a higher end Yamaha...they make some of the best non-Martin boxes around.

+.1 Carvin is synonomous with good quality.
