I need a new pickup! =)

Hey everybody!

After months of trying out a Duncan Invader, I decided it was going to be a keeper in my strat. However, I'm getting a new guitar (LP) and I need a new pickup. Here's the tone I'm going for now...

Good cleans. I need well rounded cleans (Not too trebley), but I don't need them to be excessively clean. Next, I need a good lead tone. I know this sounds like a JB, but I was thinking of a Custom or maybe even a Distortion (I considered EMG's, but I didn't like the cleans). It needs to have a good low end chunk, good palm mutes, but it needs to let the first three strings somewhat sing (UNDER SEMI/HIGH GAIN).

The style of music I'm going to be playing is still forms of Punk Rock (Blink, Sum 41, Rufio, etc), but there's also going to be some Progressive Rock and Classic Rock (Coheed & Cambria [Excellent Tone, by the way], Rush, Floyd, Sabbath, Cream). I really don't mind if it sounds dark, but I need to be able to have a THICK tone+a nice soloing tone.

Help?

Re: I need a new pickup! =)

Well, the custom gives ya a lot of chunk, but it can be a little stiff on the leads. As for the JB, great leads, but the palm-muted stuff could use a little improvement.

Honestly, I found the best of both worlds in a Custom with an alnico 8 magnet...though those alnico 8's have pretty much gotta be ordered in bulk.

I didn't find the distortion's cleans all too pleasing either...though its all a matter of preference.

If you really want singing leads, the JB

If you really want great chunk, the Custom

The C5 in a good LP will do exactly what you're wanting.

+1, the C5 is killer in a guitar with plenty of natural mids, makes it nice and balanced.

Do you think that the Custom 5 will be able to do what I want? I was just viewing the tone chart, and it has scooped mids. Here's the amp settings I'm going to be using:

Bass: 4 o'clock
Mids: 2 o'clock
Treble: 2 o'clock

These will be dialed into my Vox amp with the Numetal (Boogie) dist channel. So there's going to be heavy distortion. Do you think that a JB will sound thick enough in a 10 lb Mahogany LP? I was thinking about the Custom because it looks like (in the tone chart) a beefed up version of the JB and a more natural sounding pickup than the distortion. When I talk about thick, I just don't want it exceedingly trebley, but it needs to have pretty good mids.

Then I recommend waiting until the guitar is actually physically here and you´ve played it before even considering changing pickups... you may otherwise be throwing money out the window...

It´s also much easier to say "i have this and that setup and dont like this and that attribute" than it is to take a virtual guitar whose acoustics may be radically different than the norm and choose the perfect rig based on hearsay ;)
