I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

They're similar to a guitar combo amp, but they use full range speakers instead of guitar speakers for one (no tonal coloration, it puts out exactly what it sees).

Check this out. Great clean (and crunch) amp for as cheap as I have seen one. If not you Rick, someone should grab it!!

yeah i used to own one. my friend also bought one after hearing mine. real good amp though didn't sound right on the metal settings with my dark sounding guitar. the metal settings were too dark. good but just not right for me. they cost £169 in the U.K which is really good value. if i thought my podxt would run nicely into the cubes clean channel i would probably get one.

by the way would you guys recommend a keyboard amp over a guitar amp with a unit such as the podxt?

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

I have a Roland KC 450 keyboard amp for my synth and I plug it up to my Strat with my old Boss GT-3 once in a while. It's clean but it does not have the punch because it does not have a preamp. I would prefer a Fender SS amp but not the Dynatouch.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Look at a used JC120 or even a JC90. I tried the keyboard amps from Roland, but I found them too skinny sounding.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

I was going to recommend a JC 90 or 120, depending on how much juice you need. But you said for bedroom, with a drummer. Both of those bad boys are loud - although they have enough headroom for Godzilla to stand up. My next choice would be the cube (Just got one -love it!) I know it's a modelling amp - but: It's a ROLAND modeling amp. The clean channel is a "JC model" Very flat, very clean. I bet it in fact IS a JC - just way less juice, speaker & cab...I'd say you should have kept the Cube 60. They sound good at low volume too.

I went with the cube 30 cause a) I just don't need to be that loud and b) I didn't have the cash or space at the moment for a PODxt Live and a cab/power amp of some sort. +1 on the Roland keyboard amps, maybe the 350. (Note - I'm NOT a Roland Junkie!!!!) Besides the flat response, they have three or four inputs so you can easily add a mike, a drum machine, or I'm thinking a cheap bass through a digitech RP Bass pedal or such. 1 amp and you get Guitar models from the POD, a mike channel, a channel for bass, and something left over for guests, keyboard, drum machine or whatever.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Try the Tech 21 Power Engine 60, or the Crate PowerBlock with the PODxt.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Best Solid State clean sound i have heard yet was from a 2x12 Peavey from the early 90's.... I was at the Peavey Warehouse near Toront obefore they shut it down, and they had ton's of old gear lying around... stuff that was damaged or been discontinued and never sold.... anyways this 2x12 Peavey thing had the best clean sound i have heard from a Solid State amp...... the dirt channel was awful but clean was happening.......

But for Modeling Multi FX units you are best off to get a Keyboard amp...... Full Range amp to reproduce the whole sound of teh POD without mud from a real guitar amp....

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

get a modeling amp; I suggest vox amplifiers

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Vox AD120 head, L6 Vetta or HD147, and sell off the POD to help finance it.
Or, go with Fretfire's idea of the POD Pro XT + power amp.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Didn't you say that the POD was on the way, and that you didn't have it yet?

In that case, I agree with the keyboard amp recommendation. The reason is simple: if you want to use the POD amp and cabinet models, then you DO NOT want to play through a guitar amp. A PA is the best choice, and a keyboard amp is essentially a small PA. Most K/B amps give a fairly "pure" amplification of your sound.

I play through a POD xt Live, into a direct box to the church PA (pro quality), and use the direct output of the direct box to run a line into a Hartke B30 bass combo that I use as a monitor. At home, I play it through a Peavey K/B 3 combo.

Using a guitar amp for a POD basically sends your guitar signal through TWO preamps, double-coloring your tone, usually with undesirable results.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

Roland JC120
Roland JC60 (1x12", 60 watts, GREAT amp and a lot lighter and easier to move, I have one, they are kind of rare)

Well a Marshall does need a bit of volume to sound it's fullest.
You're probably better off getting some modeling amp but Randall makes some good SS amps with killer cleans.

I concur 100% about the Randall comment. I've found that my Randall has a really amazing clean channel for a Solid State amp. I can get really nice jazz sounds if I need them. I've grown to like it's distortion too, and the 100 watts are plenty for a gigging environment.

Re: I need a solid state amp with a great clean channel!

fender ultimate chorus dsp. that has the best sounding clean i have ever heard, solid state or tube. to me sounds just like a deville on clean.

ok but there are a few things i don't get about keyboard amps. the descriptions of them seem the same as guitar amps except they have a horn?? and a couple of other little etxras i am not familiar with. you have any more info?

Those were amazing Clean amps!!!!! I have regretted selling mine since the day i sold it.... mine was the slightly older one before DSP and it still had the analog Chorus that sounded so lush! I have a Prinston Chorus amp now and the speakers crap out around 3 on the volume knob... The Ultimate had some powere and better speakers. Too bad Fender no longer makes these amps..... I am on the hunt for a used Ultimate Chorus wit hthe Analog Chorus..... hope i can grab one... i missed out on one for $350 Canadian a few years ago...... should of grabbed it!
