Re: I need clean undies

Once you find out about the lack of cleans and the fizzyness you'll wish it to hell ;)
j/k
Great score, have fun

Re: I need clean undies

Effects loop allows you to put certain effects in between the preamp and the power amp section of the amp. Most people agree that modulation and time effect pedals (flanger, phaser, chorus, delay, etc) all sound better post distortion, which is why they come after your distortion pedals. But since the distortion on your 5150 is coming from the preamp (in the overdrive channel) you have to put those effects AFTER the preamp. So what you do is take a cable from the effects loop out and run it through your effects, and send the "amp" end of your effects into your effects loop in and voila! done :)

Re: I need clean undies

I also own a 5150. A noise gate is always a good idea with that amp! I usually put it in the effects loop. If you do put it in the effects loop and don't have a super noisy pedal in the loop, put the gate first thing, especially if you're going to a delay! Having all that hiss multiplied is not fun!

Re: I need clean undies

I don't get any noise with the amp. High volume even. The pre is at 4 too. Anymore is rediculous lol. This thing has a crap load of gain.

Re: I need clean undies

its actually a really amazing sounding amp if you back off the gain...it only ever got fizzy for me when you piled the gain on...

the pre never needed to be above 6 for me ever...anythign else is just added noise and saturation that was not needed...

the ultra plus is a nicer amp IMO...

Re: I need clean undies

i have the same Block EVH 5150 head... but i like the clear plastic front someone added to yours... These amps are wonderful if you like huge bottom end and some dirt... they get slammed alot by more vintage pure-ists and Peavey bashers... but they are a fine pro level tube amp that will get you that hot rodded tone quicker and cheaper then most things out there...

The channels offer many different shades of Distortion and cutting back on the dirt gives a great more vintage tone while cranking it gets into metal town..

My 5150 is not noisey except in the lead channel with the gain cranked.. With that much gain it is to be expected..

Congrads on your buy and watch your hearing with that beast!

Re: I need clean undies

ps- as far as a lack of a Clean channel... with my old band i used to A/B between the 5150 and a Peavey C50 head.... the C50 was my clean channel... i used a custom head switcher made by www.axess-electronics.com It is discontinued... It used to allow me to use both heads into a single cab.. one and a time of course...

but i'm thinking of trying a Tonebone switchbone and use the amps with seperate cabs... just means if i get into a band again i'll have to have 2 mics instead of one... but i also have the old switcher system still anyways..

I'm on the hunt to find another 5150 head used locally... a cheaper one for back up

Re: I need clean undies

that clear grill is awesome. wow. i want an amp that looks like that.

Just looks like a peice of plexi-gl*** to me. One that small would be cheap.

You've got to be kidding! I can't even type in the word plexi-gl***. It gets sensored! Geesh!

Just go to Home Depot and look for Lexan panels in the windows section. They're pretty inexpensive.

Re: I need clean undies

No reverb? No tremolo? Gah, you kids and your distorted amps!

:D Just fooling, very nice. Thank God you got off SS!

Re: I need clean undies

Yeah for real... congrats on getting onto this "tube" bandwagon. Prolly just a fad, won't go nowhere... :D Looks good!

Might wanna take a swiffer to the inside of that thing. Dust + tubes + heat = not healthy. You'll find these things have different care and feeding habits than SS rigs. The tone is so worth it though. :D Very niiiice!

Jeff Dunne gets great sounds out of his, ask him for tube/micing tips.
