I need help.

I've written five songs over the past couple months and every time I finish, I forget them. I need a method to write a song and REMEMBER it for once.

Steven's Rules for Not Forgetting Your Stuff / Losing Your Great Ideas:
- Record when the inspiration is striking you.
- Write everything down when your creativity is starting to leave you. Get all the riffs, chord progressions, scales you're messing around with, etc. etc.
- Structure what you have written down into something that makes some kind of musical sense (Ex. Riff 1 - Riff 2 - Bridge - Chorus - Solo - Chorus, etc. etc.).
- Leave it alone for a couple of days (if I don't do this I end up thinking that everything that I'm working on sounds like crap for some reason).
- Come back to your song and record the whole thing the way that it's structured in your planning stage.

If you have the ability to re-learn by ear, record. If you have the skills to transcribe and sight read, commit your riffs to manuscript paper.

I particularly agree with GuitarStv. I have examples in which everything that I overdubbed when the idea first struck seemed to fit. (Just needed a bit of editing afterwards.) Everything that I tried adding a few days later seemed unconnected.

Get an easy way to record
I use hertz on my android phone if I dont want to break out the laptop.
Jot down at least what you need to remember the song (I keep my notes in 3banana, so it goes directly to my online storage from my phone)
Usually its the chord progression, and the main riff or 2. Also good for lyrics (since they seem to come to me while driving, I just pull over or park somewhere and put it in a 3banana note)

Re: I need help.

Quit smoking pot so much, it kills your short term memory. ;) Try hash in stead lol.

Record your riffs, I've always been amazed what I came up with on old recording tapes.
I have the same issue as guitarstv, to me everything sounds like crap first but later on i think it's brilliant.
