i need suggestions for a new head and speakers to put in a 2x12 cab.

i need a new amp. the stores around here dont carry much. so i cant just go and try out alot of stuff. i have always been a big marshall fan. so i want to either get another one or something that sounds similar. i play everything from clapton type blues skynyrd to tool, godsmack and corrosion of conformity. as for guitars right now its just my dean V. but i play everything from teles and strats to les pauls too. i tried one of the new marshall vintage modern heads its souned pretty good but i think there are better out there. so what would you guys suggest for those sounds. also what speakers would sound best with it in a closed back 2x12 cab. i havent messed with speaker much.

Orange AD30 2x12 combo. I love those things....pure sweet rock tone.

i have tried orange amps but they were too compressed sounding to me. also i want to stick with a head and cab.

Check out some Laney's, they have that marshall vibe but are pretty unique. I use Eminence Texas Heats in my 2x12 cab with my Laney's and it sounds great.

You mention the Orange amp you tried was too compressed, did you try it at a higher volume level?

At lower volume levels I find my Orange AD30 to be quite compressed, but wind the volume up a bit and it really opens up

I use Eminence Red Coat Private Jacks in a closed back 2x12. They are a greenback clone, rated at 50 watts each. Sounds great w/either my 78 DR 504 Hiwatt, or a 68 Bassman. I play a variety of blues and hard rock/punk styles w/them.

I use a Maxon RI 808OD for the crunchier stuff. My pups range from mellow to hot. It all sounds good w/my cab setup. However, I do prefer the somewhat quicker breakup that a GB style spkr will do. Check out some of the other Eminence Red Coat and Patriot series spkrs for different style spkrs; there's a wide variety.

I recently bought a Splawn QuickRod.........it'll cover all those tones you mentioned. Infact Tony Rombola of Godsmack plays one I guess......I dunno about the speakers for a 2x12. I use g12t-75 Celestions in my 4x12 with great results......

get a budda superdrive. it'll do everything you described. these aren't metal amps but they do have a very nice raw + thick brown sound.

the splawn is also a good choice. it is more compressed than the budda but will also give you more gain.

it seems like there's an infinite number of sweet tube heads. I really like Fender Bassman heads, Marshall DSL50's, Marshall JMP's, Orange Rocker 30's, Orange Tiny Terrors, and MATAMP heads. Peavey's got a ton of good tube amps now (6505 sounds like a pissed-off Marshall, the Windsor sounds like a JCM800 with a TS in front of it)...if I was gonna get a bunch of tubes to go on top of a 2x12 and try to sound like a Marshall, I'd grab the Orange Tiny Terror and never look back. That thing's only like 7 watts.

the loudest they would let me turn the orange up was about 3-4. i have looked at splawn amps several times. i wouldnt mind getting one. but i need somthing fairly quick. and the wait time is too long for new. the ones i have seen on ebay are the older models. that people seem to be selling off for the new ones with the new clean channel. i saw godsmach a few weeks ago and they were running splawns and deizel's. when i saw tool last month i could see a marshall and a deizel as well. i have heard good things about the jmp's. the only marshalls i have owned were a jcm 800 and jcm 900. i liked the 800 alot but i need something with an effects loop. and i dont like the idea of having an older head modded for one. i have used texas heats before in cabs. those are the only speakers i have tried really. i wouldnt mind trying the private jacks. i always liked greenbacks. i plan on trying the marshall vintage modern agian and the JVM head. the JVM seems like it would be great but too many knobs for me. i may like to use alot of effects but i never liked alot of knobs on amps.

I dunno man, it sucks that your experience with orange is so negative because when I think of the Marshall tone with fewer knobs all I can think of is Orange. I'd try them again and get the volume knob up there...at least try a Tiny Terror 'cuz they'll let you crank that.

Otherwise, it's true that Marshalls sound like Marshalls...maybe you just want a DSL50.
