TS-9 is the one for SRV tone...or the (pricey) TS-808. I have two...never use them. I use:

Boss DS-1! It is the most versatile pedal I've ever used. I just turn everything up to about 1/2 way and leave it on all the time (like Satch or Vai do...) when I want a rock tone and to be able to go from clean to scream with just the volume control of my Tele...HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Fulltone '69 is the best Hendrix in a box tone I have ever used.

If it's SRV tone you want, buy a used TS-9 and send it to our fellow forum member John to have it modded to TS808 specs.

Thanks Lew!This is new territory for me.I just want to push my tube power without blowing out the windows of my house :laugh2: I've been gravitating towards the TS-9 for awhile-now if I can only find a used one.Now who is this John you speak of?

I strongly second the Fulldrive2 if you're looking for Tubescreamerish tone.

An OD pedal is one piece you shouldn't skimp on. There's lots of good one's for around
$100, but you're better off going a little higher. Check these one's out.

Banzaieffects.com The Coldfusion and Fireball are $200 and get top ratings.
Fulltone Fulldrive II
Maxon OD pedals. There's about 2 or 3 and all are good.
Tonebone Hotbritish and Classic
G2D
Aramat Green Machine
SIB

If you see one you're interested in, research the harmony reviews to get a good overview of it's plusses and negatives.

Yeah, but you know: SRV didn't use that expensive boutique stuff (he used a TS9 or 808)....Jeff Beck doesn't (he still uses a Ratt)...Satch and Vai don't either (Vai still uses a DS-1)...etc. Lew

yeah I'm also getting a new OD pedal and I've recently posted a thread for this issue...I was actually getting a TS-9...it is 130$ in Istanbul so I've ordered Line 6 DM-4 from my friend in USA...he'll bring it to me and I've bought it for 150$ it has 16 diff OD pedals and a TS808...so it is more useful to me...he's coming next friday and I'm curious :)...maybe I'll even get a TS-9 for pre-boosting the DM-4 anyway it depends...

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

I use a BOSS SD-1 myself, and love it. It gives great drive and picking clarity.
I perfer it over the DS-1's tone capability.

Is the Aramat pedal really in the same league as those others?!?!

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

Different ODs work better with different guitar/amp combinations, there really is no "Best" OD. If you want to go the "boutique" route you might want to follow the forum at Toyz for a while, those guys are fanatic about that stuff and most of them are quite knowledgable on the subject.

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

The Green Machine isn't much different than most of the other tube screamer knockoffs. Lew's got a point about lot's of famous players relying on $50 pedals.
The bottom line is you've got to find the one for you. At least if you buy used, you can swap them around for a few months till you find one that IS your tone. I did that for a few years....buying and selling OD pedals till I stumbled on a few that knocked my socks off. Those would be the Klon Centaur, Banzai Coldfusion, Fulltone FDII (orange), Fulltone 69, and Blues Pearl Blue Screamer. Unfortunately, I've sold off a few of those. The Klon is my "lifer."

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

Yeah most use normal obtainable pedals when touring and at gigs.
I never did take anything of my more expensive gear on the road......besides allmost everything I have used pedalwise was modded...and I could never remember what the heck I have done to them;)

Yup, right again.

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

The BOSS SD-1 super overdrives are very close to the TS-9, there are differences but they are a bit more dynamic sounding, the BD-2 blues driver is nice also, a bit more distortiony at times sounds like it has more gain than the SD-1, and less midrangey ... the DS-1 I put in the distortion category (of course I use it maxed on gain and modded), The DF-2's if you can find one is even hotter, but smoother ...it's still in the distortion category though. The OD -1 if you can find one off ebay is nice, very clear and open sounding.
The Rat is a great pedal as well, I've heard that the newer ones have gone down a bit ... try to snake an older one would be my advice. The marshall blues breaker II is really smooth, I personally didn't think that the tone control was that responsive, but that could have been the one I used.
The guyatone is nice, forget the model, nice and fat.The SD-2 dual overdrive that boss made was really interesting, and useful as well.
Also, BOSS made a pedal (one of those that didn't catch on) the XT-2 Xtortion (yeah that's the way they spelled it) ... most people hated it for rhythm work, but it was really nice for lead work, very creamy, and not harsh.
Another suprise is the old hM-2 heavy metal, now that was a great pedal, most people thought so; However it makes a nice overdrive used with strats, and teles, even if a bit more buzzy at times.

Best OD, if you have the cake for it, is a Fulltone Full-Drive 2.

I second that. Fulldrive 2 - The new 3 mode models anyway (2003 & 2004).

Also, the Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. Has a clean blending feature that is in a class by itself.

:burnout:

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

Maybe not technically ODs, I dunno, but the Keely Java Boost and the Time Machine Boost can really goose a cranked tube amp. If my old DOD ever craps out I'll probably go with one of those.

Re: I need to know-Best recommened Overdrive Pedal

How is the SD-2 turbo distortion by boss? i heard its not bad my friend otld me to get either the SD-1 or SD-2
